I have been searching for models of the different versions of the P-40 series. Do any of you know of a P-40D and a P-40K available in 1/48 scale? If so, could you please tell me who makes it?
If not, when converting an E to a D are there any other exterior differences other than the armament? Also, what would need to be changed to go from an F to K. From what I can tell, I will need to use an F model for the basic fuselage and the front of an E model for the engine housing to incorporate the carb intake. Any ideas or info?

Hey,
Not sure about specific versions but I know that Amt/Erml made a few 1:48 P-40's. normally companies would make most of the varients, as it would just need a few different pieces.
hope this helps,
Erik

Hi Rich
Probably the best modeller's reference for wartime P-40s is Detail & Scale Vol. 62. Apart from the carburettor intake, the depth and position of the chin radiator also differed between the F (&L) and other models.
All the best

Hi!
Here's a P-40K : http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/allies/us/mp40k.htm
Looking at my "P-40 in Action" book, the D is a E with only two .50s in each wing, so take the AMTech P-40E and get going!

Hey Rich,
I don't know if this will help you or not, but I have the Monogram P-40B Tiger Shark in 1/48. The kit is at least 13 years old. The box is open and has some shelf wear, but is 100% complete and still sealed in plastic. If you want it, it yours. PM me your address.

Thanks for the help everyone. Since my first post I found that AMT/Ertl made a P-40K that I can hopefully find. I do believe I will need to convert the E to a D. I shall try to locate an AmTech for that. I think I saw one at my LHS last week. from what I can tell, AmTech seems to be pretty good. Last but not least, I would like to thank Darryl for the generous offer!!

Go ahead with the conversion, it's just a matter of sanding the offending MG!

Rich,
AMtech also has a 1/48th scale resin Merlin-engined conversion nose that comes with markings for three aircraft. While designed for the AMtech P-40E, it can be used with any 1/48th scale kit with appropriate modification to the kit.
The Merlin engine mounting differed in both the profile and in the detail on the underside, which AMtech and HiTech Resin have accurately captured.
If interested, you can contact us at [email protected] for more information on how to order direct.
And as Tom B has stated, AMtech will be shortly coming out with an extremely limited run of P-40K-5 "round tail" Warhawks. This kit contains an excellent BlackBox Resin K-tail mounted on a section of fuselage. Modification of the kit is extremely easy. If you can lay the fuselage pieces on the 1/48th scale drawings and cut a straight line, you'll have yourself a beautiful K. I can send you an image if you want to drop us a note at [email protected]

There is an AMT/ERTL P-40N that is pretty good. The fuselage halves are molded as P-40B/C rear canopy area. By this I mean that the curved indentations on P-40B/Cs are present instead of the square canopy of the P-40N. Being my first real model, it took me a very long time to notice the cut line on the backs of the fuselage halves. Otherwise it is a nice simple kit.
You can see the square canopy in this image.

Modelguy53, I'm glad to see that AMTech is coming back online.
I can't wait to get that P-40K, and I'll get a P-40F too although I built the AMT (innacurate nose) boxing.
French P-40F anyone?

I have the AMtech P-40 F/L that came with the resin Merlin engine nose. I haven't built it yet but I have looked it over. It is very nice. Also, thanks for the link Modelguy. I definately have to have one of those K's.
