I'm wondering what a good B-29 kit would be. I built the old Monogram Enola Gay many years ago and do not want to build one that big. I've also seen a 1:144 scale one which seems to be just a tad too small. Is there one in 1:100 scale? Barring that, what is a good 1:72 scale one to look for?

I know of six kits:

Monogram (1/48)
Academy/Minicraft (1/72)
Airfix (1/72)
Academy (1/144)
Crown/Arii/Revell/Minicraft (1/144)
Fujimi (1/144)

Ignore the last two, they are either expensive (Fujimi) or very fiddily (C/A/R/M). Also, the Airfix is rather old. Go with the Academy kit if you want 1/72.

There is a thread discussing relative merits on RMS written in 1997, but still applicable.

Monogram 1/48 kit:
Colour and build tips
Notes for superdetailing
Boeing B-29 Tarzon Bomber
'Lucky Leven'

Academy 1/72 kit:
Reveiew of 'Bock's Car' boxing
'Bock's Car'

Revell 1/144 kit
Revell-Monogram B-29 "Squadron 144"

Not a B-29, rather an article on the Academy 1/72 KC-97L that may help with respect to aftermarkt parts and also finishing.

As a final note, the 1/72 Airfix kit has a 610mm (24") wingspan and 420mm (16.5") length, so of course the Monogram will be 1220mm (48") and 840mm (33"). That may pose some storage problems.

Cheers,
Linz

Linz is right on the mark!!
1/72 B-29 by Academy is the way to go. They also have several different versions.
They also have some other 4-engine prop subjects. (B-17,B-24 etc....)
Good Luck!!

Hi , I 'm the New Guy , but Interesed in US. Modern and WWII aircraft , and also modeler .

I did B-29 from Academy in 1/72 scale and like Linz and lambertjr says is the best model in this scale . Academy done some version of B-29 - Enola G , Bocks Car and You have KB-29 Air Tanker . If You want to have B-50 also Academy have this model . For better reduit model I sugest Eduard PhotoEtched Parts , Aires cannons and AeroMaster decals for Korean War . Hard job but B-29 looks very beauty.

Best Regards

Hi there
Don't even think about the airfix B29 it is an old kit and would need loads of filler etc to close gaps etc.
