Big like larger than 1/32...

I just got an old (probably about '95 issue) kit off ebay of a 1/24 Airfix Ju-87B Stuka (for a measly $40 USD mind you lol); It's my understanding that the newer Airfix kits suffer alot detail wise, but mine is very well done, no flash at all, and a plethora of parts...

(Bigger equals better detailing )

Question is, has anyone else ventured into the land of 1/32 plus and the results they've gotten? I plan on this kit being my landmark AC kit, and wanted to find out opinions, tips, etc. for working in such a grand scale...

I started the Airfix 1/24 Supermarine Spitfire Mk1... but lost interest when I realised that the wingspan was almost half a metre and that I had nowhere to display such a huge plane.

The big stuff really intrigues me. I've been eyeing up the Trumpeter 1/24 Mustang, but I have no idea where I'd put it once I'd finished.

I've got a few 1/32's in the stash (Tamiya F-16CJ, Academy F/A-18C, Trumpeter F4U-4), but they're miniscule compared to the RoG B-1B in 1/48 that I bought on a whim. I rarely have second thoughts on purchases, but that one gives me pause.

I've only built one large-scale aircraft, Trumpeter's 1/24 A6M2-N "Rufe." This was built for a review, so only a little extra detailing went into it.
You can see that, at this scale, there is plenty of room left for detailing.

The Rufe was not nearly as large as the Stuka, but it still takes up a lot of room. I'm 6', 200 lbs., and the built kit requires two hands to hold.

The thing you need most when building one of these behemoths is room. Clear off your workbench. Once things like wings are attached, it can be difficult to manipulate it without bumping something. Painting can be difficult also. If it won't fit in your paint booth, you may have to spray outdoors or at an open window. This alkso increases the chances of something landing on the fresh paint.

Just make sure you have the room to build, manipulate, and display it. They make a great centerpiece !

Hope this helps.

Well, we do rebuild real aircrafts, but I have a Trump 1/24 Spit Vb on the go (which I should finish, eh?) and I have a 1/32 MiG-3 and Bf 109G-2 in the stash.

The Airfix Stuka is rather tempting.

Hi Don

Finding the space is my big problem. I've got a few 1/32 scale kits, but I haven't started them because I just don't have the room for large kits in my small flat.

But, having said that... my birthday present to me was Koster's 1/48 scale PB4Y-2 Privateer conversion! In terms of the room it'll take up it's probably the craziest thing I've bought... It'll be enormous, but Sooooo tempting! It's sat beside me now saying "Build me! Build me!"

All the best

The panel lines are recessed as are the rivet heads on the fuselage, where as the wing rivets are raised. Very good work on Airfix' part, the only flash I've encountered is a few spots between the exhaust pipes. So far I've primed and painted the cockpit area of the fuselage, and now concentrating on drilling out the exhaust pipes and gun barrels (Thank God for micro drill bits!)

One thing that concerns me though; My decals came without the swastika seen most on the Stuka's vertical stabilizer, playing HE double hockey sticks trying to scrounge up a few...

I have built 2 of the Airfix 1/24 Spitfire Mk 1 and 1 Messerschmitt 109E, Superb kits. Now my skills are far better I'm tempted to do theses again, but I would have to detail them in such a big scale. I had decided that I would stick to 1/48 scale but I did buy a Revell boxing of Hasegawa's superb Fw 190D-9 for myself for christmas

I have a couple of the older ESCI 1/12 cockpits that I am building some Sci-ci stuff around, thats about as big as I go. The one is almost 3' tall. Once complete, I'm not sure how I am going to store/display it! :-) Right now it scares my dog. :-) "Q"

Yes Phil,

Bill's Rufe is one of them.

"Why?"... assuming you mean the price... because they reckon people will pay that much! I love my hobby, but common sense kicks in before I hit those prices... I'd never explain it it SHMBO! (a little at a time and I still get there... )

All the best

I heard somewhere that trumpy's 1/24 Fw-190 D comes with suspension, ruber tyres and PE flap thingies (can't rember exact part) mabye this is why the price is so high?

cheers

Hi Phil

Yes, but the complicated undercarriage also makes it splay under the weight of the model (according to FSM)...

It all boils down to what you're prepared to pay.

I like to build the 1/35 and 1/24 scale Aircraft kits. I love scratchbuilding the detail and opening up the panel doors. Cockpit are the best, you can add a lot of realism into them.

Hi All,

I'll build anything from 1/144 to 1/24. Currently in the midst of Trumpeter's 1/24 Bf 109G-6 and the newer TBM-3C Avenger. Both excellent kits with their own drawbacks.
The Bf 109 was started over a year ago, and I work on it a bit then put it away....lots of ejector pin marks to fill. The Avenger shows how they've improved over the past 1.5 years for sure!
The 1/24 Airfix kits are excellent for their age...I've got the Bf 109E and FW 190 waiting to go.
There are several great build articles for these aircraft over at www.largescaleplanes.com

Hope this helps,
JK
