David, I feel for you as I am in the same boat. Just as I think I have it down, it all changes! The names attached to the P-40 variants also gets confusing; Tomahawk, Warhawk, or Kittyhawk, never know which goes where. In RAF and Commonwealth service the P-40 was designated as just Kittyhawk!
Great you say, No- from what I have found, the P-40 F & L were designated Kittyhawk II, the P-40 K, L & M were designated Kittyhawk III, P-40L in RAF and Commonwealth service were known as Kittyhawk II, Kittyhawk IIA and Kittyhawk III.
The first 200 – 230 (still busy) P-40 F & L were also known as Kittyhawk Mk IIA I’m still trying to sort this out!
One thing is sure just about all the Allies including Brazil and China used the P-40N.
To me
http://www.p40warhawk.com/ is a good site for just about all the info on P-40s,
this includes diagrams and factory drawings under the Technical sub menu! Got some of this list’s info from there:
Curtiss:
XP-40 (prototype)
YP-40 (First three P-40s served as test models)

P-40A (Only one Ser No 40-326 converted to reconnaissance model)
P-40B (Tomahawk IIA)

P-40F Warhawk (Kittyhawk II and Goshawk)

Plus post WWII they became F-40 (Pursuit changed to Fighter). Also there are multiple designations for conversions.
Have a look at
http://www.pioneeraero.co.nz/p-40n_kittyhawk.htm for info and photos on a restored P-40N in RAAF service. There are quite a few projects on P-40s. Hope this helps!
