With just over a 18in rotor span, the Academy kit would be hard to display. So I modified the rotor head so that the blades would fold. I cut of the tip where the blades would fit into, then filed out a opening. Using 1/8 rod to replace what was removed, drilled and pinned togather.
There a more pics in my gallery under "helicopters"

I wonder why Academy did not make an option for the rotors to be folded?
Anyway, keep it up. Do you have any closer pictures of the folded rotors. In the future when I buy this kit, I'd like to be able to see how you did it. I definitely do not have the room to store a Frog like that with the extended rotors.
Not sure if I asked or not, but do you plan to include any Marine figures, and/or flight crew for a dio? Since the rotors are folded, the flight crew would work as could the Marines gathering around the helicopter as maintenence crews work on the bird on say the deck of an LHD/LHA. Just a tossed out idea.

That's a nice detail you've added. With the way you've done it, can you extend the blades back out or are they permanently folded now? And, do you have some more photos of what you did that you could post? That is a nice answer to a potential display problem.

Great build so far, as mentioned before the folded rotors is an excellent touch.
Holdfast, I'm guessing its 1:72 by the size of the paint pots. The 1:35 one thats supposedly coming out is going to be HUGE!

Joe, that is just awesome. I have mine waiting to be built, it will be awhile before I get to build it. Retired now and in the middle of moving . But I love the idea and will do it to my 46 when I get back to building. Love your build up. Great job!! Thanks for showing us how you got the blades to fold.

Dave,
Joe is building the 1/48 Academy CH-46 Sea Knight (Phrog) model. Also, there is no 1/35 CH-46 Sea Knight coming out. You are thinking of its cousin, the US Army CH-47 Chinook coming out from Trumpeter in 1/35 this fall, and yes, it will be big and beautifull. I can't wait to get one.

Hi Joe
Beautiful work! I hope you're keeping notes as you go, because this build really should become a Feature.
All the best
