I'll go shopping for my 190 later . I'll get the Academy Dora if the Papagei Staffel is not available. I might have trouble doing the mottled camo especially since I don't have an airbrush Anybody have tips? I read something about "sponge painting" somewhere My allegiances might change, though, when Academy releases their Stuka here But heck I'll do both if I can! #:-)

I tried sponge painting a long time ago. I did it with some tissue paper. What you've got to be careful with, is the amount of paint you've got in the sponge.

I got Academy's 1/72 Focke Wulf FW190-A which can be built into a 6 or 8 version. Still have to do research on the subject. The kit looks nice with finely recessed panel lines, two canopy versions, a choice between a bomb or an auxiliary tank, and extra underwing cannons.

Does anyone have references about the Butcher Bird's flaps? I might try dropping the flaps and I need details on what the inside look like.

Yes jeepney, sponge painting is used to crete the mottled camo.

I cut off the flaps last night. Cut some gashes into the wing when the cutter slipped a few times . A little sanding might smoothen things out. The kit's wings are thin and cutting off parts is easy. Be careful not to bend, break or warp them. Now I'll need detail shots of the insides of the flaps.

Kidding, go ahead and enjoy ... Do post pics of your progress somewhere, so that we can take a look.

BTW, I don't think you need to do much on the inside of the flaps at 1/72 scale, since it won't be all that visible. You may just need to put in some styrene, or fill up the gap with superglue. This is what I saw in Mike Ashey's book. He suggests these approaches for the flaps.

Hey, one more thing.. did you say 'Academy kit'?

I made that plane years ago. Camo colors didn't exactly match up, but what the heck! i was learning to make kits at the time. I even remember that I broke off one of the props on the damn thing, and had to use superglue to put it back .

I'll see if I can put up pics of that ugly thing sometime !

Yep it's Academy! My favorite brand! Nice and cheap :-)

I don't have anything against Academy. In fact, all my kits until 2-3 months back, and the ones which I have made so far are all Academy stuff. This is for the simple reason that there were no other brand avlbl here at the time(and still so !). So do go ahead, and I hope you do the kit more justice than I did #:-) !

Only when I discovered Ebay, and the fact that there were other brands avlbl made me go for Monogram and other brands.

As for the Mike Ashey, nope , it's not available online. However, you can get copies of it at Ebay,Amazon or InternetHobbies. Both his books are good, and I highly recommend them to any serious A/C modeller. Both of them are worth their weight in gold !

No 2 gives most of A/C modelling stuff in pictures, and is absolutely superb . But it's not so easily available .

I did a lot over the weekend. I joined the fuselage halves together. Some panel lines near the rear don't match. There is a step near the engine but it was covered by the fuselage guns. I then attached the lower wing half to the fuselage. Fit was very tight. No problems. I then attached the upper wing halves to the fuselage and the lower wing half. Huge gaps at the wing root. I try to attach most of the major assemblies before puttying and sanding so I can eliminate all gaps at one go.

And the group build hasn't even started! #:-)

Nice to know that Andrew has finished his FW-190. We'd all like to see pics of your stuff Andy !

However, I'm sorry to say that this cannot be considered for the group build, since it has been done much in advance. As per group build rules, the plane has to be started after the date provided, which is Dec 1. This has been arrived in consensus with all the folks participating, and I think it would be unfair to the rest if it is considered as part of the build.

So, as much as I would like to, I cannot take this as part of this build. Sorry !

Andy, if you are interested, you can definitely pick up one of the remaining A/Cs and do it for the build. There's still lots of time left to start, and I'm sure you'll be able to come up with some other plane which is equally as good. All the best !

I'm thinking of doing 1/48 prop planes myself BP. The only thing holding me back is my desire to keep most of my models at the same scale for quick comparison. Besides, 1/48 jets and bombers are huge #:-)

If you have a film camera Andy, you can use a color scanner to convert your pictures to digital files. Some imaging stores might be able to help you with this

Any other Butcher Bird builders out there?

I'm already building a Me 109E4, but maybe if I have the time I'll build a FW 190A5 too... probably one carying a torpedo !

Count me in on the 190 field. Doing the Tamiya 1/48 A-3. The basecoat for the cockpit went down last night, and the detail painting begins tonight with Vallejo paints. Great stuff for detail painting.

Don't know about doing progress shots though. I'm still a hold out from the good old days of film cameras. And processing costs being as high as they are, the progress shots may not come until the final product is done. But I'll see what I can do.
