Hello all:

You normally don't find me in this forum, but rather over in the figures forum. That's not to say that I don't like airplanes, I just don't build as many of them as I do other things.

Anyway, I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to fly a T-6 Texan next April when my wife and I go on vacation to Florida. I'm really looking forward to it. Originally, I was going to do a one hour flight in a P51 (a dream of mine) but the $2800 price tag was a little steep. The Texan on the other hand, is $600. Much more in my range. Not as butt-kicking of a plane, but still WWII vintage, so I'm happy.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you knew of any T6 kits out there in either 1/48 or 1/72. I have the itch to build one in anticipation of my flight.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hello John!

That's funny! I just bought Heller's 1/48 NA T6 D/G "Texan" today! TODAY! The kit is still unopened and sealed!
Do you wish me to do a "live" open of the box for you?

Jean-Luc

P.S. I think ocidental did a T6 in 1/48 too...

Hi John

Firstly... you lucky ******* - not that I envy your flight in a T-6 at all...

There are a couple of good T-6 kits in 1/48 scale - is Heller's the same as Occidental's? - a fine kit. Despite rumours that the moulds were lost, Revell "found" Monogram's classic 1970's toolings again and have re-released the kit at a bargain price in the Reno Air Racing set.

All the best

VOILA!

The kit seems to be nice! It has ENGRAVED panel lines! OUF! I feared I had to scribe the whole panels!
I don't know if it is the same kit as Ocidental's but Heller seemed to have made one of their better efforts with this one! The only bad thing is that the decal sheet has lots of unused space! Look at that! they could have made 4 or 5 options instead of 2 (one french and one US)
Here are some details:

The engine looks good and the cockpit detail is also well rendered!

Ok! let's finish the camembert and return to the scanner now! this is the end of Armorama's first (?) live coverage of the opening of a kit!

Jean-Luc

P.S. Rowan, I also bought today the following:
Condor 1/48 german missile set 1 & 2
MPM 1/48 Fieseler Fi103 (V1) and Fi 103 "reichenberg"
MPM 1/48 Focke Wulf FW 190 S
Hecker&Goros 1/48 French pilots and German pilot + mechanic

I think I will sleep well!

Academy has an pretty neat Texan in 1/72, with decals for Korean, US and Israeli aircraft.

Here it is; a little bit converted with Swedish decals in order to depict a Swedish Sk 16 trainer aircraft. Please note that it was my third model (in other words, it worked fine for a beginner!).

(with its friends)

Airfix is supposed to release a Texan in 1/72 (with South African and Swedish - doh! - decals), but I haven't seen it yet...

Good luck!

Wow! Thanks for all the quick responses guys! I really appreciate it.

Jean Luc...what a funny coincidence that you picked one up today. Very cool! Thanks for showing me the inside so far. Any other pictures you take would be great. You'll have to let me know how well it goes together. The camembert looks good too

It would be nice if I knew exactly what the one I'm going to fly looks like. Then I could give the model to them as a gift in hopes that they would give me a discount! LOL

I can hear it now....

"Gee, thanks for the nice looking model. For being so nice, we're going to give you a break on the price. Instead of $600, it'll only be $595."

LOL

I'll be looking into those kits you all suggested.

Thanks again!

This is my first fixed wing A/C

The only one I finished so far actually. Not too much a fan of flying things.

This is a Testors kit at 1/72 scale. Recessed panels and all.

Details are pretty thick and the USAF symbol is etched on the wings and rear fuselage.

Since I made this to look like the Philippine Air Force version, I had a hell of a time applying putty to erase the etched USAF star symbol.

Enjoy the flight John. I've done it twice and it is great! You will be surprised at how easy that plane is to fly. Considering that it's a trainer that should be obvious but make sure you go through the aerobatics, it makes the video that much more interresting.
