Is it going over-board?
would the stress skin be evident in 1/48?
what's the most common part of the aircraft exhibiting this effect?

From what I have seen in real photos, the wings are the most effected part. I have noticed some on rear fuselage parts also. Mainly the tail sections.
I don't think it is over board...as long as "you" don't go over board. I have seen some that looks like a ditch at scale which would turn into a bigger ditch in 1:1
