Hey guys,
I'm sure a few of you have heard about the P-38F that was pulled out of an ice cap up in Greenland. Well there is a web page that has a restoration slide show and also a newsletter. According to the poeple at the museum, "Glacier Girl" was taxied under her own power twice during January. I've been up to Middlesboro, KY a couple of times to see the aircraft and it is amazing that they are so close to the first flight of that plane in 50 yrs. The web address is www.thelostsquadron.com . Hope you enjoy the site as much as I.

Thanks for the info! The P-38 is my all time favorite WWII a/c! Gonna have to bookmark that site to keep myself updated. A good friend of mine was at Duxford England a couple of years ago when a vintage P-38 crashed and got demolished, tears filled our eyes! Talk about a waste, the pilot was at the end of his show when he decided to do an inverted loop and misjudged the height, it was too late to do anything when he found out!!
Thanks again for the headsup!!

A home movie of Glacier Girl taxing down the runway is avalible to watch ,in the Gazette, on the web site www.thelostsquadron.com There is a little bad news though. According to the newsletter they don't think she'll fly for another 4 months. But, never the less progress is being made.

Another 4 months is not too bad considering how long she had to wait to come alive again!
Just happy to see another warbird entering the world :-)

They just have a few more panels to make and some other small stuff to do, but hope to have it flying mid-summer. :-)

I'd heard of the story in the newspaper a while ago, but the article didn't do very much to describe how much work and effort was put into retrieving the plane! That's quite a story!!! I suddenly have inspiration for a model......

Hey Penny,
How much you give me for my negatives when i covered the October, '01 engine runup for the Kingsport paper? lol
Only shame is that the intercoolers won't operate for the superchargers. Bob Cardin told me that General Electric examined the main turbos and said they were in operating condition.
Great bird, and an odd mix of P-38E and F characteristics to boot!!

and . . .
when I interviewed Roy Shoffner at the runup, he told how he asked Lockheed for help with the restoration.
According to him, Lockheed sent a generic set of P-38 three-views and an offer to sell him engineering and manufacturing drawings for several tens of thousands of dollars.
You'd think that a major defense contractor would be a bit more willing , even with modern-day liability issues, to help restore a product that helped make their corporate reputation AND history . . .
my $0.02 worth . . .

Ohh, I almost forgot...... The History Channel will be doing a piece on the plane after she takes her first flight. It was said to be scheduled around six months before it was to air.
