I'm working on a Bf 109 G-6 with Hartman decals (the black tulip on the spinner). It's a 1/48 Fujimi kit, and their instructions on painting are a little unclear - mainly because they don't use RLM numbers, but the darn Sangyo codes. As I understand it, the winter scheme consisted of white being applied over the existing cammo; as the winter went on, the white would be worn in places, revealing some of the underlying camo. My question is, for a Hartman (eastern-front) Bf109 in late '44, early '45, what would be the base color scheme? Thanks for any help.

Thanks. Got any idea what the RLM numbers are for that scheme?

Just my best guess mind you :

Bottom - HellGrau RLM77 or LichtBlau RLM 76
Mottle pattern - GrunGrau RLM63v.1 over LichtGrau RLM63v.2

You think the top of the wings are also mottled, or would it be a splinter pattern? Best guesses are fine...

I would go with the splinter pattern using the same colors as the mottle pattern

Part-Timer,

What markings on Hartmann's G6 besides the black tulip? He flew lots of G6s. For late 1944 to early 45s, he flew late version G6s.

Erich Harmann's tall tailed and "Erla-Haube" hood Bf-109G6 "Chevron" winter camo scheme would probably have a based camos of RLM 74/75 on top with RLM 74 mottle on the fuselage and fin side. RLM76 underneath.

His short tailed and "Erla-Haube" Bf-109G6 "White 1" would probably have the same base camos.

It's the double chevron scheme. Would the 74/75 scheme on top be a mottle, a splinter, or some other arrangement?

Splinter camo of RLM 74/75 on top of the wing and fuselage. RLM 76 on bottom wing/tail planes and fuselage half way to sides. Mottle of RLM 74 on fuselage sides and fins only.

The splinter is hard-edge, I assume. Right? (Thanks, BTW, for the help!)

Hi Partimer

Although the spinter pattern was sharply masked on pre-war Luftwaffe aircraft, it was sprayed free-hand with semi-soft edges by the time the RLM 74 / 75 / 76 scheme was introduced.

I hope this helps

Were the splinters angular - i.e., the same shape as the early war ones - or curved? Thanks.

Hey Part-timer. Way off subject so apologize up front but where in GA you at?

I'm in the Savannah area.

Hi again

I'll scan you a pattern - that's the easiest answer.

All the best

Hi again

There were some variations, but if you do something like this with slightly soft edges (just imagine applying the pattern freehand), you shouldn't be too far off the mark:

Brilliant, thanks. I don't feel too obsessive about it, since it's going to be 95% covered with winter white. But I'd like it to be close enough for the places where it peeks through.
