Cheers Mal and Andy (I know - it is a bit of a shock to see me building! :-))
Well - there's certainly something happening:
I want to bring out the panel edges a bit more and I'll attack some of the individual fasteners with a toothpick, but the general "scuffing and chipping" is quite interesting.
All the best

Hi Rowan.
Is all this "copydex" peeling away naturally? What is this stuff anyway?,,lol
Its certainly a very natural effect and many times more effective than the old silver pencil.
You are indeed a wizard! :-)
Keep going and lets see it finished!

Hi Rowan
I am very impressed by your build .. makes me want to start my Yak too
.... if only the Baranow decals were not misprinted ... hope I can get a replacement decal sheet
BTW the I-16 at eduards site looks very nice too. Another model to look forward too.
... aaahh so many models and so little time :-) :-)
cheers
Steffen

Hi again
In answer to the questions about Copydex or latex weathering, I took some pics of the next stage when I did the rough winter camo. I hope you guys realise I'm making this stuff up as I go along! :-)
I cut some slices from a kitchen scourer:
and this is the Devil's brew... Copydex (basically a latex adhesive):
Dip your scourer (Pardon Madam!)... and wipe off the excess:
and apply the latex to the model:
Paint the top-coat and allow it to dry. Peel off the latex and you should get something like this:
This is definitely the heaviest weathered kit I've ever done... now to try to pull it all together into something presentable!
All the best

Hi Rowan!
This looks very promising! I like the way it tuned out. I suppose you will add a wash and some pastels next.
I also like the "sneak preview" type of the pictures... is this to make us salivate a bit? Anyway, it's great you are in the final stage of this build. This gives hopes for other builds as well... such as the Halifax! :-)

Rowan.
That looks like a great way to achieve natural weathering effects.Could be the demise of the silver pencil.
Dont tease us with a closeup of the wing root,,lets see the whole thing
Have you managed to get anymore done?,,must be nearly there now.

Wow! I would have stopped right there and put the cockpit on the shelf. Something that pretty doesn't deserve to be closed up in a fuselage! Seriously though really nice detail work.
Looks like it's going to be a great looking model. The Soviet WW2 aircraft are seriously under represented, they had some real cool looking airplanes.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi all
Many thanks for the kind words - I truly appreciate them!
Shock! Horror! I think I've sort of finished a model! The words don't come very naturally to me - it's not a phrase that I use very often! :-) :-)
You can get a better idea of whether the paint chipping worked now. The Eduard instructions show the whitwash almost mottled on - so I went one further and tried to get the effect of what it might have looked like after some month's wear and tear, revealing more of the old paintwork underneath.
Without any photo refs, I wasn't sure how the whitewash was applied over or around the existing markings, so I decided to apply the paint quite roughly and then clean the edges up - the way a squadron painter might if he wasn't masking things off.
I gave the model a couple of brushed-on coats of Klear (Future), then weathered some more with oils and pastels and used Windsor & Newton "Galeria" matt acrylic varnish to even everything out. I'd never used it before, but it dried quickly with a nice dull finish.
I'll write a full build Review and include more pics. I know I was probably nuts to try so many new techniques and products on a sample model but, maybe against the odds, I think I just about got away with it...
All the best

Excellent work Rowan.
I love the way the paint has several different fading effects where the whitewash as been removed.
So out of all the new techniques you tried, which one would you say has been the most successful.
Andy (++)
P.S Please do not take this long to finish a model again :-) .

Hi Rowan!
How to start! Yipee!!!!
After one year here, I have the privilege to see a finished model from the Magician! Last time I felt that way was as France won the World Cup for the first time in 1998! :-)
The model looks great and the weathering technique you used really paid of! You said you would be away for the week-end but I'm sure you closed the door to your workroom saturday morning and opened it sunday evening ! I don't wan't to see how you look like right now! :-)
I still can't believe it! can this be true...

Hi guys
Many thanks. Jean-Luc, I hope me finishing a model won't be as rare an event as France winning the World Cup! :-) Actually, I'm really looking forward to matches - I'm not a footaball fan, so it'll give me a chance to get some modelling done while my friends are distracted.
I did head off yesterday, but bad weather washed out almost everything that had been planned - so we cut our losses and came back this morning. :-(
All the best

Hi Rowan,
Fantastic looking Yak, with your talents, it's a shame we don't see more of your finished work! You have inspired me to break open an AM Yak,...... now it's just a matter of finding a suitable campaign for her. :-)
thanks,
Frank
