Hello everyone!

As you may already know, my modeling has been on hold for a while because the army. I'm now having a five-day easter leave so I decided to do some modeling. I picked up a 1:72 scale Hawker Hurricane I had in my stash for the 'Fighters under the midnight sun' campaign. I also had a small PE fret for it but I decided to try and complete the kit before I return to duty. (I'll buy another kit for the campaign and build it "properly" with PE and more TLC than this one) If I succeed, this is my quickest build so far. Here's some in-progress pics:

That's a Revell kit, 1:72 scale. This boxing came with decals for one Finnish (also featured on the box-top) and one Russian Hurricane mk.II This is one the three WWII FAF planes that appeared to stores here in Finland (I think they might be just for Finnish market as the decals feature proper Finnish swastikas). It's also the better of the three, this kit's from 1998, while the Brewster and Hawk are decades older.

Well, even the Hurricane isn't perfect. The cockpit is quite spartan and the kit's missing a rearview mirror etc. But the most glaring error is that the kit is being sold as a mk.II with markings for the only mk.II plane used by FAF. What you find in the box is a mk.I with wings modified to the 12-gun wings used in mk.II's (and that's sloppily done, check out the photos of the filled mg openings in the wings' leading edge. I presume they're not supposed to point the guns up?). Fortunately, those opening in the wings are easily filled and Inscale makes aftermarket decals for Finnish Hurricanes.

I'll post some more pics as I get along, and hopefully get the plane done tomorrow. Anyway, comments are of course welcome.

Hi Eetu!

Nice to see you are flying again! This seems to become a fine model. Did you know I made a "24 hour Marathon build" lately and managed to build a P-40C from Academy in one day? No big deal as I know someone who builds models in 12 hours and in 1/48 scale and you know what? The finished models do look great!
Anyway, good luck for your Marathon build!

Nice to see you back modelling Eetu, even if it is only for a short period.
The Hurricane is looking good I would never attempt to do a build in 5 days I would need more like 5 months

Welcome back Eetu!

It's great to see you safe and sound - and building! As Jean-Luc says, I bit of time-pressure can actually get good results... now, if I could only live up to what I preach and finsh something myself! :-)

Looking forward to see this progress.

All the best

I forgot to mention, this more like a three-day build, I started building on Sunday. Now I'm not sure if I can make it in time. The buss back to the garrison leaves at 9pm and I have to do some shopping today too. And to make it worse, my progress was delayed yesterday as I had add some more putty to the spent cartridge casing ejection chutes as priming the model revealed some pits.
Here's a pic of the model with painting underway:

I couldn't quite make it. I got the upper side painted, but ran out of time.
I'll continue next weekend.

Btw, if you're wondering you I'm still home writing this, I got lucky. There was only one buss leaving and there was room for only about half of the guys. I was one of them. There was supposed to be another buss coming to pick us up, but none showed up. Then one of the NCO's there said that we should call our unit's duty officer and tell him the situation and take the buss today.

Here's some more progress:

The decals are one and it seems I'm going to need at least one more weekend-off to finish this plane. Anyway, it's coming along nicely, I think.

Thanks! And yes, it's all brushpainted, except for the primer, which came from a spray can.

Okay, this turned out to be a little longer build than I expected, but here's some more progress pics again:

I think I found the way to accent panel lines. I used diluted Vallejo acrylics applied with a small brush and rubbed off any paint not in the panel lines with an eraser. This method worked great. This technique worked as a light weathering process as well. Somehow the paint job looks much more realistic after rubbing with the eraser as well. I had to do a little touching-up as primer started to show through at some high points, but in the end, this seemed a really good method for doing panel lines.
Hopefully I get this "quickie" plane finished soon! :-)

Hi Eetu!

Nice to see you are back!

This eraser method seems to be interesting! I wonder if it works on airbrushed models. Maybe the coat of paint isn't thick enough... It seems the eraser also adds subtle weathering as you said. I like the effect on the wing root area. You can also use a "hard" brush to buff your model a little.

Looking forward to see it finished... this week-end? Otherwise it will be the longest "week-en" project I've ever seen! :-)

Looking very nice Eetu!
I like the effect you have achieved on the panel lines.Thats one area I really have to work on.
I arrived home today and the decals you sent me have made it safely. Thanks again!
Looking forward to seeing your quick weekend build finally finished,, :-)

Now it's almost done!

The first flat coat is on and I've painted the wingtip lights (transparent colors over metallic silver makes a nice effect) and the tailwheel. What it only needs now is a little touching-up with flat varnish, some paint chips applied with metallics and perhaps an antenna wire (if I just can get some fishing line glued to the antennas...) and perhaps a dark wash to the wheel hubs, wheel wells and insides of the landing gear doors. As a whole, I'm quite pleased with the result. On the second FAF Hurricane, I'll concentrate more on the seams (this started as quick weekend project) and getting the canopy frames painted more neatly. Now they turned out pretty bold and left some nasty rigdes as I removed the masking tape. That's the downside of brushpainting, I suppose.
(Btw, that dark age of only brushpainting is about to end, as I'm planning to purchase a compressor to power my airbrush that I got last christmas)

But anyway, this project's nearly completed. Let's see, this quick weekend project has taken over two months now! :-)

Edit: migrating my pictures from Photobucket to Imgur. Here's the pics of the finished model:
