Engineering like life is about compromise. A nose intake can be as efficient as a side intake. Other factors also influence design. Early jet engines especially axial-flow turbojets were very sensitive to airflow fluctuations explaining the high number of early jets with nose intakes.
Getting back towards the main topic. The intake design of the SU-27 and MiG-29 are optimized for high angles of attack. By having the intakes below and behind the leading edge of the LERX more air can enter the intake at high AoA. The same principle applies to the F-18.
