I just saw the A-26 Invaser diorama posted on this site. This plane passed me by, I never saw this one before, was it used in WW2?

From "American Warplanes of WWII" Edited by David Donald through Barnes and Noble, cw 1995
This is loosely paraphrased.
The A26 was designed to replace the A20. Its prototype flew on July 10 1942. The early versions has a glazed nose, there was a night version with radar and four ventral 20mm cannons. The A26B has 6 .5 in machine gusn in the nose and remotely controlled dorsel and ventral turrets each with 2 .5 in guns, then up to 10 more 12.7 mm guns in underwing configs. It could carry 4,000 lbs of bombs. Max speed of 355 at 15000 ft. It was the fastes allied bomber of WWII. There were 1355 A26B's made and 1091 A26C's made with a bomb aimers glazed nose (back from the early version).
It went into combat with the 553rd Bomb Squadron at Great Dunmow in England in '44 and was soon operating in France and Italy. It flew air -to-ground missions. It flew 11,567 sorties and dropped 18.054 tons of bombs. It flew some intercept missions against fighters. There were 7 air-to-air confirmed kills.
In the Pacific was used as an anit-ship and ground attach weapon. The A20 was favored though.
The A26 served with USAAF's 3rd, 41st, and 319ths Bomb Groups in operations against Formosa, Okinawa and Japan. They were also active near Nagasaki up through '45.
It saw service in Korea also as the CB-26B transport, TB26B/C trainer, VB-26B staff transport, EB 26C missle test vehicle and RB-26BC recon plane.
It continued on through Korea, Vietnam and Algeria.
As far as the kit goes it was a nice kit to build. No major issues with the seams or fit. It has Great cockpit detail, made it a shame to put the canopy on (actually I only set it on without glue so I can display it without it). Nice decales that went on well. Off beat subject well worth the build.
