Geez - how in the world do sites like this elude me for so long?? Found this site while doing a search on Google for reference materials.

I'm an aviation artist working in oils and pencil. I invite you to visit my site at:

Hope to hit up some of you guys for research material for future projects!

Best regards,

Hi Wade

It's great to have you with us and I must say there is some truly outstanding artwork on your site... Jaw-dropping! As someone who always wished he could draw aircraft I'm filled with jealousy! I really recommend everyone to take a look!

All the best

Welcome to Armorama Wade! Really nice website you have.Love the pencil drawings! Had to laugh when i saw your topic on Descriptive Geometry.Hadn't done any of that since 1975 when I was in JC.
Please don't hesitate to ask of anything. There is allways somebody here that knows the answer or where to find it
cheers!

Bonjour Wade!

Bienvenue sur Armorama!

Very nice website with great paintings/drawings! Thanks for the link.
If you have questions, don't hesitate. But I'm afraid we will ask you many more in return! I think about doing Aircraft related Artwork in the future (maybe in comic form) and there is a lot I can learn from you!
Do you use models (plastic kits not girls ) to make some of your paintings?
I warned you! See... the first question! :-)

Jean-Luc

Hello again, everyone ... thx for the friendly atmosphere.

A little background - a long while back I was as "into" modeling as you can get - ate, slept, read Scale Modeler over and over again, etc ... eventually realized my true passion (and skillset) was drawing, which led to oil painting eventually. However, one thing I learned was that scale modeling and military art share the same thirst for accuracy and documentation - as a result all aviation artists I know use the same references sources as serious modelers - I even use decals! However, of course in my case I only use decals as a reference for specific paint schemes, etc.

As to your question, knowledge of Descriptive Geometry aids me tremendously is realizing the perspective correlation between the viewer's eye position relative to the elements depicted in the painting as viewed through the "window" of the picture plane (the canvas). With that knowledge, as you can see on my site, I will "plot" projections of aircraft/buildings, etc.

However, using that same knowledge of how things should appear through the picture plane window of 'x' canvas dimensions, I will on occasion shoot pictures of a model as the basis for a simple composition - my "Morning Mission" (P-51 taxiing) on my site was based on a model ... I will position the camera lens (the viewer's eye) the appropriate scale distance from the model after first plotting that distance via DG layout, however.

As with most artists, including the well-known Robert Taylor, a favorite of mine, I will take models outside in the 'real' sun and shoot the model in the appropriate position to show "correct" shadow lines and basic tonal layouts.

From there, DG plot or photograph + shadow study in the sun, I'll work out any problems with a finished pencil study of the scene and sometimes a small oil color study. Then it's on to the final canvas.

In the next life, I'll get back to scale modeling - and also R/C modeling! Speaking of the latter, I hope to see some of you at the giant scale R/C warbird fly-in June 6th-11th in Denver, Colorado. See their site at Warbirdsovertherockies.com.

Cheers!

Wade
