John - I don't have the Short Sunderland, but I build alot of old Airfix kits (lots in the stash). They aren't up to 21st Century standards, but are great kits. Some work needed here and there and that kit probably has the dreaded raised detail.
One persons build:

Hi John
And for something a bit nearer to home, check out this Feature on how to transform the classic Airfix kit.
All the best

Built one way back when -- looked great & impressive hanging from the ceiling ... Got another in the stash, with all the WEM detail sets.
It is a good kit, takes some work, but yields a good-looking model even OOB ....

Old Airfix kits are good too enhace your skills. They usually have a lot of flash and sink marks, they need some extra work but they in general they are accurate in shape and sizes. When finished they look very well.
Now I´m working (among other projects) in an Airfix Westland Lysander in 1/72.
