Greetings all here is a bit of fun. An original colour image from WWI. I found a huge load of them at the host website. Though this is the only avaition subject offered it seems. The narrow cheveron on the Nieuport 17 fuselage appears red and white. Although color photography was around prior to 1903, the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis, patented the process in 1903 and developed the first color film in 1907. The French army was the primary source of color photos during the course of World War One.

That is exactly what I was hoping for Jan! How very sharp of you to see that. I would like for the era to be come more familar to everyone here. To see the human story and the courage of the people of the time. These kinds of images let their voices be heard once again. If an image is worth a thousand words, these human stories are not forgotten.

I’ve seen that site before and book marked it.
Its true that WWI really wasn’t that long ago but it seems to have been overshadowed by WWII.
Stephen if you have the military channel I believe they have a show on every now and then called “First World War” complete with first hand accounts from veterans.

JackFlash,
Thank you, these are extraordinary!
Some appear colorized. I haven't read any of the info, do they mention if these are all color film, or if any are colorized photos?
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Stephen
I dont know if it ever appeared in the US - there was a TV series over here a year or two back called something like "WW1 In Colour"! Original tinted film etc. Some of which was quite extraordinary!
All the best

Most appear to be both stereopticon colour film prints and black and white colourized versions originally. These were glass plates etched with images in side by side similar to a modern day child's viewmaster. Here are some more images for those interested. The colourized versions are far less realistic.
