Hi all.
This is the old Airfix Series 1 SpitfireMKI in 1:72. It was the first model I built when I decided to get back into modelling at the end of last year and Ive decided to build it again to give myself a direct comparison of how my buildings hopefully improving, and also because its a great little kit and I wanted to try and do it more justice this time around.
Im also writing a review as I go along, as the site doesnt have a single built review for an Airfix aircraft and this is one of the most popular Spitfire models on the market still. Its an ideal kit for new or returning modellers.
Heres how it stands at the moment. Its sprayed with Tamiya acrylics and is being built oob apart from dropped elevators and Im using some different decals from the ones supplied with the kit.
Happy modelling.

Great work so far.
I contemplated doing the same for my B-17 but the thought of having to strip the paint off the whole fuselage just turned me off.
Did you do the same for yours? Repainted the whole thing?

Hi Jazza.
Thanks for the comments.
I bought the kit again. Its an Airfix series one and you can pick them up for about £4. Even though the first one I built is looking really dodgy now alongside my last couple of builds, its still my favourite.
Dont be turned off by the thought of stripping paint off a model. Just pop it in a sealable plastic bag, smother it with oven cleaner and leave it for a day or so.After that rinse it under the tap and gently scrub it with an old toothbrush and your back to the bare plastic.
Not sure about acrylics but this definately works for enamels.
Decals are on the Spit and it should be finished soon.

Hi all.
The old Airfix Spit is really coming together now.Construction is complete and after a last coat of Klear it'll be ready for washing and weathering.
Final touch will be a coat of matt varnish and then it'll be finished.

All finished
I have really enjoyed building the Airfix MKI Spitfire again.
Here are finished photos and some pics of the first one I built so you can see a direct comparison, which was the main reason for this build.
All the techniques used were learnt from these forums.
Hope you enjoy the photos as much I enjoyed building these two Spitfires.

Looks great Nige, It is nice to see your growth, and you did a really nice job on this newer version, but, heck, I have to say the original looks really good too. You must just be a great modeler.

Far from it Leon, but in my time here on Armorama/Aeroscale I have certainly become a "better" modeller.
Both Spits are now sitting together in the display cabinet and Ive got a smile on my face :-)
Next time I build this Im planning on doing a full rescribe.Onwards and upwards!

WOW Nige, there is certainly a marked difference. The overall effect is a lot better than the original.
Did the newer version take longer than the original build ?

Thanks Andy!
This one took about a week from start to finish. The first one took me just under a month, but with that one everytime I got to a different stage I had to find and buy bits and pieces as I went along,,microset+sol,,paints etc.
Ive already got another one in the stash and big plans for that as well!
