I was wondering of anyone here could give me their opinion on the 1/24th scale airfix kits. Thanks.

I built the Mustang(?) and Harrier back in the mid-80s when they were issued by MPC. IIRC they were definitely not shake and bake kits. They were probably beyond my budding skills to make them look decent. I'd like to try the Harrier again, I've got a question mark by the Mustang because I think it was a P-51, but it may have been another WW2 single engine plane like a Spitfire or Bf-109. Memory's fading fast.

Hi azizmaz,
They are basically very good kits. State of the art in their day. I have built 2 Spitfires and 1 Bf 109 and I gave away a part completed Mustang. All very good but if I was to build them now I would want to superdetail them. My brother built the Ju87 Stuka, awsome. I know nothing about the Hurricane but I believe that there are a few problems with the FW190, around the cowling/spinner. I've seen the Harrier built up and it looks good.
They will build up into impressive models OOB. :-)

Azizmaz, I have seen the JuU-87 built, looked nice, but the P-51 , built by the same person looked to need some real detail help as Holdfast related to. I 'll stick to 1/32 myself, more selection and nicer kits available now.

I am building the 1/24th Hurricane Mk I at the moment, and I am enjoying it.I have not built one of these 1/24th kits in over 20 years,my last was the Spitfire in about 1976.The Parts on the Hurricane have some flash, and some parts need some help to fit,but its all minor stuff. The kit comes with a Merlin Engine and detailed interior.I will be adding some wires and stuff to the engine and some other stuff to the cockpit like seat belts and smaller bits after I get a closer look at some cockpit pics.
I would reccomend the Hurricane .Good kit!
Hope this helps. :-)

Re. the 1/24 Airfix kits, I built the Spitfire and the Hurricane many years ago. If anyone is working on them, Patrick Stephens Ltd. published a series of books which were designed to complement them. They were under the title of 'Classic Aircraft and How to Model Them' There were 3-4 in the series and can still be found in the specialist second-hand military booksellers. As they were designed specifically for the Airfix kits, I would imagine they are still useful today....Jim
