Hi John.
If you have access to an airbrush I would recommend spraying the P51 in Alclad. Do various panels different shades. It takes a while to mask up but the effect really is worth it and will bring your Mustang to life.
Hope this helps

I should think the worn aluminum would give it a nice look.
You could try to live on both worlds and build an OD over Silver scheme, there are many examples of this scheme out there.

John, I recently built Revell’s P-51D for the Show Your Teeth campaign. It was my first venture into Natural Metal Finishes. I painted it with Revell 99 Aluminium (I’m still too inexperienced for Allclad) as it depicts a Korean War aircraft (they wore a dull aluminium finish). For a brighter polished finish Humbrol 27002 Polished Aluminium works great.

One thing, do remember to check your preparation, as even the tiniest imperfection stands out!

Hi John and Eric,
Alclad is very easy to use, it is pre mixed so it goes straight into the airbrush, drys quick, and has a very durable finish.
The only downsides are, it smells horrible and can give you a headache with prolonged use, so you need to wear a mask. It does shoot through the airbrush rather quickly and you must keep it mixed otherwise the metal flakes settle to the bottom of the cup.
Alclad is definitely worth the effort and with several colours in Aluminium, some nice panel variations can be applied.
Andy
