About four years before the 1:32nd Hasagawa FW190 D-9 kit came out, circa 2001-02 I built the very old 1:32nd Revell FW 190 D-9 Dora that was first released by RevellUSA in the early 1970s. First issued in 1973, I think. I wanted to open up the engine cowling and selected that kit since it had an engine. I used parts from the old old Hasegawa Dora, used the Verlinden resin cockpit detail set and used the resin wheel wells set from Jerry Rutman (USA). Mr. Rutman does very high quality kits and parts/conversions parts.

Engine Cowl area of kit cut off to use to vacuform new cowls, in thickness closer to scale. I have very old Mattel(sp) vacuform machine purchased in 1967.

Jerry Rutman wheel well set. Kit wings insides has to be thinned a great deal.

port side interior, propeller to the right: Verlinden resin tank piece.

Starboard interior, propeller to the left; Verlinden PE set/resin parts, copper wire, sprue

PE Engine cowl flaps from old old Hasegawa kit, vanila card stock used to make pattern to see if parts would all fit together in engine compartment and then those parts were fashioned; took several tries on the yellow reservoir atop entine; coolant reservoirs carved from bass wood and wooden dowl rods w/ styrene bits.

No decals were used on model. Insignias, numbers were airguned with hand made templates so they would look faded. Paint scheme came from Squadron Signal FW 190D-9 Walk Around soft cover book. Studied pictures a great deal.

Tailcode numbers from Archer Dry Transfers

Solder was used for hoses since it doesn't kink like steel and other metal wire; then painted dark gray. Forgot to mention that pilot shoulder harness belts were not added until right before attaching the sliding blown canopy hood, as they had to be attached to a Verlinden PE part just aft of the cockpit.

Spent 9 months on this model, taking breaks from time to time, built for a local IPMS contest. Thought quite a while whether to start project by taking off rivets and raised panel lines first, or not to do so. Decided not to . . . and that should have been done. Hope not to make that mistake again.

Hi Rick,

Excellent work Sir.
Nice SBS and some great detail work there. I copied a few photos and had a close up look. Very very nice. Bit of a jack of all trades eh.
Love the engine bay and the paintwork is fantastic.
Wish I had the patients and the skill for something like this.

Take it steady

Vic

Hello Vic, my friend:

Thank you for the kind remarks. This may be the oldest original
kit seen on Aeroscale in a while, eh? Re the patience? Well,
I'll say this to the Bard from Bristol, . . . I didn't have much
patience for fiddling with this kind of project when I was your
age, fer sure, big time.

Hi Rick

Wow! That is suberb work! Apart from the sheer fact of bringing the old Revell classic into the C21st, I'm really struck by your faded paintwork technique. There's masses in your build to learn from all stages of the build... can I tempt you submit a Feature with a fuller description?

All the best - and thanks for sharing

Oh my, Rowan:

It was so nice of you to respond to my SBS thread on the very old Dora
kit that I tried to detail. I will send you a PM about this. And perhaps we can
make an article out of it, if you think the Aeroscale group would be
interested. After all, it is such an old kit and I would surmise that
scratchbuilding is not all that popular or maybe "interesting" would be
a better word here, to the current generation of younger aircraft
builders. However, I'll give it a go. . .

Thanks again,

The Miami Jayhawk

Hi Rick,

Looks like it was a fantastic piece. Sorry I missed the thread when it was "live". Looking forward to the feature, my friend.

Thanks for the heads up Rowan. I must admit I'm a fan of the stylish writings of the talented Mr Brownlee, so I'm quite kean to see this feature

Hi Gordon

Yes - I'm afraid Rick must have taken the other pics off-iline, so lot's of Red-Xs. Don't worry though, I hope it won't be long to wait for the full Feature.

All the best

Rowan
