Hi all.
After some badgering and leg pulling from certain members,(you know who you are ), I bought the Revell Sopwith Camel in 1:72 a few weeks ago.
This is the first time Ive attempted a WW1 subject, although I got halfway through building an Airfix Tiger Moth a few months ago until it all went spectacularly wrong at the rigging stage.
So,,armed with the experience gained from that Im having another go,and so far Im having a lot more luck.
The colours are just what I had in the paint box,and the riggings probably not 100% accurate, but its just a fun build to see if I can a: learn something different and b: actually finish a biplane :-) :-) :-)
Today I managed to finish the wing rigging, and seeing as Im feeling pretty pleased myself and quite shocked I actually managed to do it I though Id share a couple of pics.
I can believe how small this little Camel is.The fusalage is smaller than my little finger. I must be mad. Although not as mad as Almonkey who built a SPECTACULAR DH2 in this scale.
Heres the pics,,enjoy :)

Nige - Great job on the rigging. You did well to resist the temptation at doncaste of antoher WW1 biplane :-) I tried but could not get you to buy one.

Not strictly true Ross,,I dont think you noticed the little Boeing P17 Stearman I picked up from the stall opposite the stand :-)
I now have kits of all the types my dad flew, and intend to build them and have a small display of the 3 aircraft with my dads wings, his membership card to the Caterpiller Club and a couple of photos from his RAF service in his memory.

My little "fun" build is almost finished.
Got the decals on today and the undercarraige and tail are fitted and drying before I do anymore to it.
Just final touch ups,Klear/varnish,and the prop to go.

Its great to be learning a few new techniques and Im really enjoying my first WW1 subject.
As Jack Flash said,,

Nice one Nige, that is looking so good. I'm glad that you have delved into the joys of WW 1 modelling so early. I really regret not having tried it sooner, although my next build has been delayed, due to a certain Spitfire, but I too intend to tackle a camel

Hey Nigel! Coming along nicely. One thought...how about a bit of dry brushing of some silver on the engine? Just the highlights... Maybe a light dry brush of a slightly lighter green over the upper surface ribs?

In any Case Model On!

Hi Guys!
Steven:,rest assured, dry brushing and some post shading/weathering are on the list of things to do
Ross: I used the figure purely to fill the gaping hole that would have been left if I hadnt put it in

Wooowwww ! That is a great little beauty. It looks very good. I love it, the paint scheme is very nice and well done.
What did you use to make the rigging ? Stretched sprue ?
I imagine the work it gave you. Congratulations Nigel
I have the same Revell kit in 1/48 waiting till some day I feel confidence to face the rigging job

Nige,
Great work as usual. One of my favorite things about watching your building is that you aren't afraid of anything. NMF - check. Rigging - check. I suppose soon you will add a working propeller and working warning lights

That is awesome rigging for a first attempt. Can I ask what technique you used? I'm gearing up for a try at my first biplane as well, and honestly, rigging scares the heck out of me. I was thinking of glueing some .008 wire I bought. Seems to look about right. But, I've been going back and forth on drilling out some holes to run the wire through, too.

Whatever method you used, sure looks good to me.

Hi Mike.
Glad you like my little Camel
The rigging is smoke coloured invisible thread, readily available from any sewing shop.
I drilled holes in the top wing with a 0.3mm drill and pin vise.Just far enough in to seat the thread.I tried to drill them at the approximate angle that the finished wire would sit.
The holes in the bottom wing were drilled all the way through.
All the drilling was done before painting and assembly.
The "wires" were attached to the top wing, and left to cure overnight. The next day I attached the top wing to the struts and left everything overnight to dry properly.
Now the fun bit!
Thread the wire through the hole and tension it by gripping it with a pair of locking tweezers and let the weight of these pull the wire taught. I then added a tiny drop of CA into the hole(from the underside of the wing).
After half an hour or so,snip off the excess thread with a new blade.
When all the wires are attached, leave everything to cure overnight.
Lastly,,sand any excess glue down with some fine wet and dry and dust the hole with the underside wing colour and the attachment point dissapears.
As I said in an earlier post, this was a fun build mainly to see if I could actually manage to rig a biplane, and the rigging isnt 100% accurate,so check your references.
Hope this helps,,and remember,,,have fun!

Nigel, thank you so very much. I can't tell you how much that explanation helps. Not only knowing the technique, but the sequence, is really starting to give me the notion that I can get one of these little beasties together and looking half-way decent. ...well - getting it together anyway...

Thank you again very much for the help.

That camel looks really good Nige
Some day I want to give a try with a WWI plane. I have your technic for rigging saved for excellent future reference.
Nice work,
Wayne
