Hi All.
A few weeks ago I posted photos of my first attempt at a WW1 biplane,the Revell Sopwith Camel in 1:72. To which a Monsieur Jean -Luc Formery,also known around here as Tedmamere replied,




Well,,being of relatively sound mind and body,,(debatable),,how could I resist a challenge like that??
Off I went to the LHS,purchased another kit,and armed with 2 rolls of Tamiya masking tape,a compass cutter and a couple of jars of strong coffee,I set to work.
After 3 weeks of masking and spraying stripes,Im definately in need of medical attention.Im seeing stripes in my sleep now,but I think its all been worth it.
So everyone,,and Jean-Luc especially may I present,,,,,,,,

You told me yesterday that you were about done with your next WWI plane, but I didn't think you were tackling such a complex scheme!!! HOLY COW!!!! You've got my admiration 100%!

I'd be really interested in hearing how you progressed. What colors did you start with, and in what order did you do the striping? I would be sweating bullets worrying that each additional spraying may goof up all the previous work. You must be one steady handed fella.

Congratulations on an amazing finish and an amazing accomplishment.

It has my vote! Very nicey done! Please tell us about tour colour sequence and what you did to give them such a crisp line demarcations.

I have been privileged to watch this come together over the last 3 weeks, and now its finished it looks better then i ever imagined it would.
A definite winner of MOM in my book.
Now do a build feature, so we can learn the secrets of masking.
Looks fantastic Nige, but where is the ship it goes on :-) .

Noted RNAS, RFC, RAF writer Mike Westrop comments on the originasl scheme;

"It was the personal mount of Lawerence Percival Coombes when he was instructing at 204 Training Depot Station at Eastchurch.

See both the current Cross & Cockade (vol 37 no.2 2006) and vol 7 no.3 1976 (an article titled "Coombes Colourful Camel").

There are some differences of opinion regarding the interpretation of the colours!!!

Coombes flew with Naval 10 and there is a photograph of him standing in front of a striped camel - whether he flew a striped machine or not is uncertain - however, he clearly tried to incorporate the Naval 10 humbug stripes into the dazzle design - very effectively I would say! MikeW"

In a recent issue of Cross & Cockade Intl. we see more about this and other colourful Camels.

Im off on tour in a week until late October so I will be writing a feature and catching up on a couple of reviews while Im away from the workbench.
All your questions about masking and my sanity will be answered in the article,I hope.

Jan,,,,I drank far too much coffee than is good for anyones sanity while building this and wouldnt recomend it to anyone!!
I suppose Id better enter it into MoM then,,
I have to agree,,it would make a great Harricature :-)

I know it's been said above already, but that is just an awesome job. It has to be the most impressive finish I've ever seen...and I'm OLD! You deserve all the accolades you'll recieve for this, and more. Awesome...
