Hello all, this being my first post i have a doozy for you all. Is there anyone out there in email land, in the process of or completed the afforementioned kit. I have been building Tamiya for years in large scale with some nice results. This is my first venture away from Tamiya and i'm looking to also get into some finer points of detailing etc. Im struggling to come to terms with not having any paint reference for this kit and need some advice. Also once ive established paint requirments, from where can they be procured? any sound advice anywhere?

Hi Pete.
Welcome to Aeroscale!
I havent built this myself as I tend to build WW2 fighters mainly, but I found this build review which hopefully will help you out and give you some pointers.

Many thanks for the info. Will be keeping a close eye on the results. Not sure about photos tho, my work is not up to the standard of some of the stuff i've had the pleasure to peruse in the forum. Let you all know how it goes tho. Just one quick question, ive seen this term oil wash to enhance details. How is this done and what with?

Hi again Pete
An oil wash, panel line wash, pin wash, is basically getting a darker colour into the recessed panel lines and details so they stand out.
Im certainly no authority on this,in fact my latest build,,the Finnish Hurricane,is about the first time Ive managed to get a panel line wash that Im happy with.
People use a variety of mediums, usually but not allways heavily thinned.
I would suggest you start a new thread and get peoples recommendations,as the wash subject will distract from your Su27 thread.
Dont worry about asking questions on any techniques etc,,you will always get helpfull and informative replies from everyone on the site.
Hope this helps

Hi Pete!

Welcome to Aeroscale, the one and best place for us wing-nuts! :-)

I have not built (or have) the big Trumpeter kit (yet!), but I do have the Academy 1/48 kit!

I have not built it yet but i have done some research on the colors, and i have some after-market decal sheets with very good color recommendations!

If you can give some more details about the scheme you are doing, i will give some more specific answers.

I don´t know what type of paints you prefer, but I have always used enamels.

For modern Russian/Soviet aircrafts there´s a range of colors from White Ensign, from England!

Link;

http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/index.html?http%3A//www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/catalogbody.html&CatalogBody

I can´t recommend these paints highly enough, easy to use, goes on with airbrush or brush, dries hard and "looks right" (at least to me!).

Fast service ( 3-5 days to Sweden!), resonable shipping fees and prices ( as ordinary Humbrol colors!) and no minimum order limit!

You are always welcome to ask around here, there´s a lot of nice people here willing to help!

Cheers!

Stefan.

Thanks heaps for the link. To answer your question about the scheme im going to use, for my first time out it is my intention not to be too adventurous and use the out of the box scheme. '582nd Fighter Regiment 4th Air Army (Soviet Northern Group of Forces) Frontal Aviation Chojna, Poland 1982' ( bit of a mouthful eh). I have no idea as to the authenticity of the scheme, whether it exists or not i don't know. If all goes well with this one i may venture further into the more obscure schemes in future builds ( Trumpeter Mig 29, Tamiya F14A and F15C, Airfix 1/24 sea harrier and Academy F18D all awaiting the result of the Flanker and all 1/32)

This model appears to be close to starting, i am having trouble finding one particular colour for it though, The reference sheet says FS26329 Blue grey, after numerous searches all over the web, i have decided that this paint does not exist. Is mixing up on myself a viable option?

hello pete! check this link out, scroll down to where it says MiG-23UB and there is a formula for mixing this fs colour using humbrol paints - but given the state of affairs at humbrol, if i were you i would make sure to get the relevent humbrol colours asap!
