I am wondering what Luftwaffe fighter squadrons were based in Romania?

I have a Hasegawa 109G and I would like to put in a scene depicting Romania in some way. Thanks for your help.

There were quite a few units. The Romanians did have a good fleet of modern aircraft, and they were successful against the Allies. The number one Ace of all time Erich Hartmann also was in Romania flying his 109. A quick google search turned these up:

Hope this helps!

Hi Chip

Romania was pretty crowded with Luftwaffe units either because of the oil fields or later because of the retreat.

What Bf 109 G do you have?

Depending on the time frame you can have much choices or few .... also as hkshooter wrote you could build an Romanian Messerschmitt ... before or after changing the sides.

if you have a unit and time frame in your decal instructions you could have a look here:

http://www.ww2.dk/ -->air units -->single engined fighter units -->choose your Geschwader -->look for airfields

As an Example: JG 52 scroll down for the different groups (Mamaia, Zilistea ... many Romanian air fields here)

HTH

cheers

Steffen

I am working on a Hasegawa G-10, which I am not sure if it will work. I also have a Revell 109 (the cheap 1/48 scale one) which might work.

Chip,

It is very cool that you want to dedicate a model to to this subject. I am curious as to why Romania? I have been there and the people a fasinating, and I built as my first model in fifteen years a Romanian 109 by Hasegawa. Love to hear your motivation.

Hi,

JG 4 was the principal fighter unit in Romania - established specifically to defend the oil fields - it was this unit that underwent its baptism of fire in defence of Ploesti when the US mounted Tidal Wave in August 1943. Gruppen of JG 5 (briefly) and then JG 301 all saw service in Romania later that year.. JG 301 was a wilde Sau 109 night fighter unit and its fighters carried a large wilde Sau emblem on the cowl - the flying sow depicted leaping over an oil derrick...

Why Romania?

Well it started out with that weird gory French thriller High Tension. I absolutly fell in love with the locations that it was filmed in. It said that they wanted to give the impression of southern France, but it was way cheaper to film in Romania. Since then I have had this fascination with this country. I have looked through the net, and books and can't get enough of its beautiful countryside.

Also, one of my favorite historical villans had a crib there. Vlad the Impaler.

Cool country,
