Why resin?

Hello all,

I'm new at this hobby and as such my eyes have not been trained to spot to nuances of some things. Looking over some of the posts where resin cockpits and such are used, I cannot see a difference from the kit supplied parts, especially at scales smaller than 1/35. To me it seems a good paint job would be a bigger deciding factor.

Teach me great ones!

There is no doubt about it, resin cockpits are FAR superior in detail. However, certain kits do not really benefit from the extra detail - the Fw190 is a good example as the cockpit is very well 'hidden'. This is further hidden on most aircraft by having the canopy closed. On the other hand, an F-16 is very open and the modern Aires/CMK/Black Box cockpits for modern aircraft are a huge (let me say that again - HUGE) improvement. Furthermore, wheel bays are far superior in resin and you can get resin parts for lots of details that you just don't get with plastic kits - for example, gun bays and engine bays.

Having said all that, many modellers still turn out fantastic looking kits without the use of resin. Personally the only bit of kit I find essential for WWII aircraft is etched seatbelts.

Of course a good paintjob is essential to a good finished kit - you can spend all the money you want on resin and etched parts but if you screw up the painting phase the kit will never look as good as a well painted OOB kit.

Hi Percheron

Here are a few comparison shots I did a while back of True Details' 1/48 scale P-40 resin parts alongside their Mauve injected counterparts:

Resin allows details to be reproduced that are often beyond the capabilities of injection moulding - e.g. undercuts. You have to bear in mind too that a lot of kit cockpits are simply innacurate - so good resin sets don't just add more detail, they correct basic errors.

All the best

O.K., got it!

That makes sense now. I think however, I will be staying with the stock stuff for now since I had a bit of a time bringing out the details of my current project, a 1/48 Hasegawa stuka. I was able to get the cockpit gauges to show up once I figured out the pesky dry brush thing!

Thanks again,

-Derek
