I currently have the 1/32 Tamiya F4E Phantom II (early) . Im not a guru on Phantoms, so I dont really know the details on what is an "early" E . I was looking around for some aftermarket items for this kit, but none specify if its for an early. Does it matter? What Im planning on is AM decals, cockpit set, and possibly the exhausts. The decals Ive looked at say theyre for an E, so, wheres the difference if any? Is it external mods or internal upgrades?

This should help, F4E Phantom II info.

Also, follow the links to other F4 types info. Any parts designated or an F4E should work just fine for the Tamiya kit.

Hello Tim,
Well here are just a few differences between the early and late model U.S. Air Force Phantoms, the early F-4E has a short gun barrel, a internal centerline 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon, and a AN/APQ-120 solid state radar system housed in a larger nose. The late F-4E has longer barrel,

The wings have differences as well, like the late F-4E has the (TISEO) Target-Identification-System-Electro-Optical…it’s mounted on the wing’s leading edge (port side) nothing but a telescopic camera. Modified wing tips w/ APR-36 antenna.

The late production had the Martin-Baker Mk H7AF ejection seats, slanted wings and the AN/ALR-46 antennas.

Aftermarket sets (early)

Black Box # CS 32019 great detail and sidewalls, wrong ejection seats. See the Navy and USAF had two different seats, the Navy seat had their oxygen bottles were under the seat in the survival pack. The Air Force seat had theirs in the lower corner of the rear seat cushion.

CAM # 32 058 has exhaust nozzles

Cutting Edge # CEC32153 has ALQ-71 Jamming Pods

Cutting edge # CEC32023 has a F-4E Vietnam era hard wing conversion set.

Eduard.cz has a great line of photo etch sets for the F-4’s, interior, exterior, armament and masks. They have a large set that costs about $105 dollars. It has all the photo etch set with remove before flight flags.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I’ll see what I can able to answer.

Joe

Mate

One other major external difference is the early F-4E did not have leading-edge slats on the wings. But it depends on what is classified as "early". Not sure of dates though. There are also differences with the spine antennas I believe.

Hope this helps, and post the pics of it. IMHO the F-4E is the spitfire of the jet-age, can never have too many of them...

Cheers

I don't know if this is too late but everything you need for an early "e" model is already in the kit. The wings have no slats and the kit comes with the early short gun muzzle. The only things you might consider are in the cockpit. Hope this helps
