I'm researching a model of an RAAF Phantom II - i have a hasegawa kit, replete with RAAF Decals and serial No's.

I believe that only one of the loaned Phantoms had slatted wings, and the Serial No WAS 69-7208 - can anyone with more knowledge than me and the internet confirm this?

Hi Andy,
After a little digging, i believe none of the Australian F-4 Es had slatted wings.
In 1989 the USAF presented the RAAF Museum at Point Cook, Victoria F-4E 67-0237 from the Block 34 production run (meaning the aircraft was slated unlike the RAAF's unslated F-4E's). USAF F-4E 67-0237 was repainted to represent RAAF F-4E 69-7208.

I remember seeing the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels while they were sporting the Phantom. Very loud... no very, very extremely loud!

This post takes me back to a boyhood idea of making a Phantom for each of the different countries that have used it. Thanks for the bump! I might just take that idea forward...

The RAAF had 24 of the F4e's, but the 1 x 'Slattered Wing' was a replacement for 69-7203 which crashed16 /06/'71 of Hevans Head the serial number [I'm still trying to locate the book], is not that of 67-0237 painted up as 69-7208 which is at Point Cook.

I;ve said it before and i'll say it again, IMHO, to the modeller, the Phantom is the spitfire of the cold war - one can never have too many of them....

29Foxtrot - what's the story with the last pic? It looks like a Euro 1 camo, did the RAAF fly the Phantom in Euro 1? I thought this scheme would have been well after their time with the RAAF?

Wiz - back in the day i used to turn out 72 scale phantoms regularly. This is the first 48 scale one i've attempted - you'll see how it turns out - photos will be posted.

Nice to build it as a RAAF version.

I am in the process of making the Italeri 1/48 Phantom II in the Vietnam camo with just some Hasegawa Mk. 117 bombs added on the inner wing pylons - otherwise OOB.

Will be my second kit to bounce me back into aircraft modelling having build tanks for about a year now.

All RAAF Phantom's were finishd in the SEA scheme, the 'Shark Mouth' bird was at RAAF Base Amberley, during a joint exercise, the tail code is the give away as to who it is.

These 2 plan views are of '34' which as my RAAF Phantom replication. This model was only built as a means of displaying resin enhancemnets and finished in the Humbrol range of enamels #116, #117 and #118.

This scheme was applied free hand.

Rob. This sure does help. I have a painting guide with the decals, but it's not the best being small and in halftones, so any reference pics are very handy. The pics i do have of '8' and '10' do not show that finish on the tail, was this a special finish for '34' do you know?

More research is being done while i make the kit.

I followed the kit instructions for the finish on the tailplane area of '34' as at he time model was being built the decal info sheet was being printed.
Knowing the previous owner of Aussie Decals [better than the current owner], was a major help in persisting in re-issue of several RAAF decal projects.

I think in the2 colour pix I sent you, '10' shows the tail area as black and '08' shows the tail area as grey.
But the RAAF gve me the pix as ref's originally

I'll sort out for the model info on the kit I used as to the tailplane area for you.

I've rechecked the pics, and yes they do show a diffent tail colour on '8', cant see the tail on '10' due to angle of plane, but they are great shots for camo.

I'm curious on how the resin seats, came out, as I did not have a colour guide for them at the time. I used the kit instructions painting guide when I did the painting of my seats for this bird.
I do have another unbuilt kit in the stash that I may get into building in the next month or so, that I intend to do as the RAF Museum subject.

I haven't painted the seats as yet - they are missing the ejection handles from the top of the seat, so i've raided some of the wifes jewellery making wire and round pliers to scratch them myself!! Wish me luck on this.

I've dropped back onto more painting of the Cat - copying you it now sports redish control/canvas surfaces and thisafternoon will get it's metal under coat.

The phantom cockpit area is due for spraying today as well - i bought more enamels for this - gonna be the first time i've sprayed enamel. Wish me more luck on this.

The handles made from fine wire are more realistic, when the castings were done for the seats the ejection handles didn't work out as a sepperate casting.

I should start on my Phamtom kit now so a comparision could be done over the comming weeks or months, between our builds. My Phantom subject in the pix was broken some years back, it now hangs from the cieling as a closed up model, [as it was originally built as subject for the resin seats, some 5 years back].

Good luck with the airbrushing with th Phantom cockpit area and in coppying the 'Cat' I hope you masked the canvas areas before the BMF coat.

When it comes time to do the 'Night' finish on the 'Cat' use a Matt Black on the canvas and a Semi Gloss Black on the metal erea of the Fuselage and Wing.

Great progress of the Phantom, pix show the workmanship so far, I look forward to seeing more of this build.

Note: Remove the Maskol ASAP after painting it tends to stain the clear parts purple if left on for long periods.

Hey andy. do you actually have some pics of the aussie F-4?
if you do thats cool, but im sure i have some pics of the F-4 at pint cook if you want them.

But the F-4 at point cook isnt actually a real aussie F-4 just painted like one.
