Hi all,

I have some Japanese WW2 planes on my shelf and I will be building them after Christmas. I do not want to use huge decals for the Hinomaru, instead mask and paint. But I could not find what color would be the best to use for Hinomaru. An article publised on IPMS Stackholm suggests that FS 31086 is the color, but I can not find any equivalent for that.

If someone knows it, could he/she help me about the color? I can buy Model Master, Gunze, Tamiya, Humbrol and Revell colors.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Cagin,
The original colour is FS:31328, fading to a rusty-pinkish brown which becomes FS:31086.
I couldn't find any manufactures that did the correct colour so I mixed my own colour to get the right shade. I started with Tamiya flat red, then i put a bit of brown in, then a bit of white and some yellow and basically kept mixing until i got the colour i wanted.
Professional aren't I :-) :-) .

Hi Andy,

I wish I knew the colour I wanted, but because I do not have any references, I am kind of stuck. The FS colors you mentioned can be seen on the monitor, but without any monitor calibration I can not understand the exact colour. So, I guess I will use youe method of mixing them and will try to find the best color match that way. May be I will use the decal color as a reference. Thank you very much for you interest.

Best regards.

Hi Cagin!

I believe Insignia Red (Humbrol 154) is pretty close.
Weathering and fading leaves quite a big span in shades!

That´s why the red was completly deleted from American airplanes in the Pacific!

Others may know more!

Cheers!

Thanks Stephan,

I think the color you mention is 153 and a close Gunze match is H 327 for that. I guess I will be using the H 327 for the Hinomaru. Thanks again.

Best regards.

Hi Cagin!

Sorry, Naturally I ment 153 as 154 is insignia yellow!

I always get those numbers mixed up, don´t know why!

Cheers!
