Hi all,

As a general technique, how do you fade decals to blend in with the faded paint of the aircraft? I have it in my mind of how to do it, but since I never have, I thought I would throw out the question to all of you.

Hi Derek.
After decalling I overspray with a very fine mist of heavily diluted base colour.About 5-10% paint and 90% thinner.
Heres an example,my Revell Sopwith Camel,1:72
Before misting

And after

Hope this helps

I also use the diluted base coat misting method. Just be sure to coat your decals with Future first to help protect them.

Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to trying the techniques out on my George.

Chuck, do you sand the decals before you set them or after? And in what way do you use the talcum powder?

I sand, too, either with the fine Micromesh sheets, or, if the decals are thick enough, an old typewriter rubber (remember them?) Always re-coat, with, for instance, Microscale decal film, though, since the decals are liable to fall apart.

Place and set decals as "normal", then sand lightly (gentle, gentle) then rub the talc into the decal and paint (it's the way I "lighten"/"fade"/"weather" paint too. I was just trying everything and stumbled onto this method.

P.S. - I've only done it with Flat finish dark colors so far.
