Hi guys.
I'm building this P-47D, and I'm confused. I read somewhere that this aircraft was painted RAF Dark Green on the upper surfaces and NM on the under side. Then i read another book that said it was USAAF Medium Green and RAF Sky.
I'm so confused guys.
Can you help, please?

I believe 'Eileen' was an aircraft from the 78th FG - if so, she would have had RAF Dark Green uppers and RAF Sky lowers - at least, thats what I've read

Hi Nigel
It's a P-47D from 78FG Duxford UK 1944.

Hi Darren.
Have a look at 78thfightergroup.com
Some great photos and more information on the 78th's Jugs than you can wave a mucky stick at!

Looking through the site I found some information on your P47.
Eileen was the name of the P47s flown by Lt Frank Oiler. He flew both Razorback and Bubbletop P47's and each was coded WZ-S.
There is a photo of Oilers P47 built for a 78th FG reunion and it looks to be olive drab over sky.I dont know if this is correct but seeing as the model was built specifically for the reunion you would hope that the builder had done plenty of research.
Heres a couple of pics of Lt Oiler and his P47s.

Hi there

Garry Fry's "Eagles of Duxford" mentions the "...green and sky painted Jugs of the 84th"... and photos of Eileen definitely show more contrast than associated with O.D./Neutral Gray.

All the best

Hi again

Dana Bell's "Airforce Colors Vol. 2" states in a photo caption; "The 78th applied Dark Green and Sky camouflage to all of its P-47s, including Eileen, shown in autumn 1944." and also has a profile of Eileen s/n 228878 in those colours.

All the best

Rowan
