In the post Revell 1/48 Ju 88 A-1 - exhaust stains! I answered a question and provided URLs to the source material.

Since then the site owner, Mr. Rod Larson of Rod's Warbirds, has graciously given permission to post the photos. Thank you, Mr. Larson!

If you have the space and want to make a five year plan here's an idea for a diorama...still Ju-88's. :-)

Jan,

Well done!

That pix of the man on the wing is the best example I've found of how the exhaust flowed over the top wing.

Can anyone explain why that one, and the top one, show the exhaust a light color, while most show it black? Different fuel during different periods of the war?

Hi Fred and Jan

I try an explanation, although I am no expert.

The darkest stains seem to be on Winter photos .. I guess ther was more oil in the fuel .. or the starting procedure and the fuel mixed into the oil to keep it more fluid.

Furthermore you get the first stains not from exhaust gases but from heat (might that be an answr to your q. Fred?) .... thus I often make them dark brown with a small white center (and only very little black)

.. but this depends on many (MANY) factors .. remember the colour discussion ... type of engine, engine adjustment, fuel type, type of oil, starting procedure, weather, type of paint, type of surface and so on .....

as I said just a try and maybe starting point for a discussion

cheers

Steffen

Thanks to all who have contributed, your pics will allow me to make an accurate job of the staining on my 88.

Cheers Pat

Thanks for sharing all the cool photos. It really forms a good basis for weathering all kinds of WWII planes.
I have seen some quite heavy staining on Bf 109s as well and these pictures are good inspiration on the variation of staining.
