The conspicuous exhaust stains were a product of the low-octane, low quality, often synthetic aviation fuels used by Germany during WW 2. The chances of seeing those lovely light grey exhaust stains of an engine tuned to run lean was remote.

Wow, the first three pictures really show some serious exhaust stains! It even seems to continue under the rear of the fuselage. Almost all the way to the tail. I will try to incorporate some of these effects on my Bf 109 G6 for the tank busting campaign.
However, I have seen a lot of pictures were the exhaust stains are much less obvious, so it seems like anything goes.
