Hi all,

First post on Aeroscale so hi all!

I am back to the hobby after a few years off. I have a Tamiya Heinkel He219 A7 UHU which I started building before my break. However I seem to have lost a fair part of the cockpit detail, it looks like I have started building it and lost it.

Would you:

a) Build the kit as is with no cockpit detail?
b) Look for an aftermarket detail set for the cockpit?
c) Scrap it?

Any opinions welcome guys.

Thanks,
Philip

Well Philip, I think it really boils down to - How important is the cockpit detail to you? In this case unfortunately, we are talking about a model that shows the cockpit quite prominently, so the choice is a bit more complicated. The choice is still all up to you, it’s your model. Without cockpit it of course is not a “contest model”, but if you are building it for your own enjoyment, do what suits you.

Hi Philip

do not scrap it!!It is a really nice model and a good thing for a starter but maybe a little complex .. but hey it is a Tamiya kit and should not make too much trouble.

What parts exactly do you need? I'm building mine with the Aires cockpit set and I do not need most plastic parts. The problem is, that I may have srapped some parts already (as e.g. the weight which I partly used)

best wishes

Do not scrap it! You could try and ask anyone here in this forum that may have that plastic part which they didn't use. If you have the courage (and the money) for an aftermarket product, then go for it

Hi Philip (and welcome to Aeroscale )

The Tamiya Uhu is too nice a kit to scrap. Have you considered adding some of the detail from scrap parts or scratchbuilding? If accuracy isn't an over-riding concern you could probably find parts from other 1/48 cockpits and/or scraps of plastic card/rod to replicate something similar to the missing bits. Use the kit instruction sheet as a guide. If all else fails drape a tarpaulin over the canopy and say it's undergoing maintenance...

I am glad the opinion seems to be not to scrap the kit! It seems a really interesting kit and I would really like to make it, but If I left the cockpit out it would really bug me! Especially as the cockpit stands out a lot as Chuck points out!

I enjoy painting the cockpits too, so bearing this in mind I may go for an aftermarket kit. I am ok with photo etched parts but have never used resin before, guess I have to start some where right?

Where could I pick an after market kit up from? I dont know of any model specific shops in my area, I tend to get my kits from general toy stores. So online would be a bonus, unless any one know where there are good model shops in London, UK?

Thanks for the offer Steffen I appreciate your kindness, but I will give the the after market parts a try.

Also while I'm here, metphorically speaking, Where would I bw able to find some backround info on this aeroplane?

Thank again,
Philip.

Hi again Philip

try Hannants, they are not cheap, but carry a lot of stuff. As for background info. I think wikipedia is always a good start (for any subject!)

cheers

Hi Steffen.

I never though of using wikipedia for this sort of information. Looks like I got an hour or two of reading later this evening!

Also I have found this cockpit on the Hannants web site, that looks like it will do the business nicely. Another bonus is that the store is within driving distance.

Thanks again everyone.
Philip.

PS. I might have some questions about working with resin shortly!
