As a figure painter, I need some help (waiting for comments about coming across to real modelling HA HA HA HAHA )
However now and again (generally again I do an aircraft kit.)
two questions
Can I pre shade without the use of an airbrush?????????????????(now much call in 54mm)
and can you do mottle camoflague freehand eg: with a sponge,drybrush ?????

Everything is possible!
But to be honest, I think the best way to preshade a model will always be the airbrush. As for mottle camos, I saw models with these painted freehand by very talented people but it never looked quite right to me. So here also I would use an airbrush. A statisfying result can also be achieved with pastel powder... with some limitations.

About the preshading, what you could try is a technique called stippling:
As in drybrushing use a stiff flat brush, put on a little paint, somewhat more as you would with drybrushing. then "jab" the brush repeatedly in a 90 degr. angle on the lines you wish to preshade (no brushstrokes, but jabbing, like Norman Bates in Psycho ).
Please note: this is desktop filosophy !! I have never tried this myself, so no idea if this would actually work.
