Hi all

I've made a start on Eduard's Avia.

The cockpit is building up into a nicely busy little "office", with the guns in the fuselage sides equipped with etched cocking handles and then trapped behind well-detailed side-frames. Eduard provide etched throttles to replace the moulded-on items - and, similarly, etched firing buttons for the joystick, which require the original plastic items to be trimmed off carefully. The seat comes with a separate cushion and a rather neat harness with unusual double-fold-over buckles/guides.

I've left off the shoulder harness until after the fuselage is finished. Eduard suggest folding it straight over the back of the seat, but there's a slot in the rear half-bulkhead that looks as though it might have been for a Sutton-style harness to thread through... I haven't managed to find a photo to confirm that.

I've "glazed" the dials of the instrument panel with Klear brushed on the rear face of the etched part - surface tension is enough to let the Klear fill the holes without running out across the surface of the panel. Once it's dry, the effect of glass in the bezels is quite convincing.

Holdfast describes the technique in more detail in his article Glazing Photo-etched Instrument Panels.

More to follow soon.

All the best

Rowan

So far it's proving to be every bit as good as I'd hoped. And I received exciting confirmation of the MPM re-box direct from Eduard yesterday when I asked about future versions:

"Concerning Avia B-534 project, there is an agreement with MPM company, they will buy a number of bulk kit and release some special versions, like this buble-top canopy modification, II.series with different nose (maybe they will be mixed in one box) and Bk-534 with nose cannon instalation."

Hmmm - a modified III série with the clear-vision canopy... that could mean some really interesting Luftwaffe and Slovak schemes.

All the best

Hi Nige

LOL! I don't know how many times I have to repeat that the Halifax is officially shelved for the time being (I've been saying it since before last Christmas...). I simply haven't the time or space to work on it at the moment - you can guess how glad I was to pass the Airbus on to Andy!

Hi Andy

Sorry about that - but I honestly don't have anywhere I could even put the box, let alone build the Airbus!

And, just to prove that I do intend to break the habit of a lifetime and actually finish a kit... here's what greeted me this morning:

The fuselage has been drying overnight, so I'll crack on today and, who knows, I may have something starting to resemble an aircraft by the end of the day... (that's tempted fate! ).

I can hardly use my famous "they're just too big to build!" excuse for those...

Set Fido on it . Andy

Hi Andy

Ahh! Fido - the infamous fictitious cat... sadly I can't - he's off wrestling a herd of wildebeest at the bottom of the garden.

Anyway, back to business and a classic example of forming a plan for a build... and then promptly not sticking to it - with almost disastrous results!

Eduard suggest fitting the radiator-shutters etc. (Parts B29/30, B32 and PE!11) before closing the fuselage halves. Fair enough, but I thought I'd be "clever" and fit them after closing the fuselage, but before adding the top-decking. This would allow me to fill any seam on the inside of the radiator bath. So much for the plan - the trouble was I forgot all about the radiator in my haste to make progress and fitted the top-decking...

Fortunately for me, it is possible to fit the parts through the front opening - a bit fiddly and I certainly wouldn't recommend this as the easiest way to tackle the stage, but it does work:

Incidentally, Eduard suggest painting part B32 - the triangular struts just visible in the second photo - aluminium. Photos in the HT Model reference book show that it's the continuation of the undercarriage struts and appears to be painted in the top-surface khaki in both original photos of a/c being serviced and close-ups of the Prague reconstruction.

OK - first scare out of the way... onwards and downwards!

Hi Rowan

your not the first and surely not the last who outsmarts himself (or herself) ... e.g. it is part of my building process always!!

Nice progress ... do you finish it tonight? .... the D.VII and Camel tomorrow .. the Halibag until Friday and you have the whole weekend for the He 112 ... and then maybe try to get some sleep on monday at work

cheers

Hi Jean-Luc

Well, first off... Have a wonderful trip!

And - yes, I'll do my best. I said I hoped to have something vaguely airplane-shaped by this evening... and here we are:

The horizontal tail is just dry-fitted to ensure everything's looking square. No major problems. As you can see, I needed to add a swipe of filler (Vallejo acrylic Plastic Putty #400 , so's not to damage the surrounding detail) at the join between the top decking and the fuselage behind the cockpit. That may well be my fault - I predicted the joint would need a little extra care and I'm going like a runaway train by my standards!

The other point worth watching out for is the wing-fuselage joint. On the original a/c there was no joint-line at the root - there was a smooth fairing extending some way out. So take a little time to get the kit's root as flush as possible - you want to lose all trace of the joint (I've yet to work on it, in case you're wondering. LOL!).

And finally, that mystery slot behind the seat again - clearer this time:

It just looks purpose-made for the seat harness to thread through so, despite lack of photographic evidence, that's probably how I'll build it.

All the best

Hi again

I haven't been able to take pics as I've progressed - but, surprise, surprise, I have actually been tinkering away when time's permitted. But I did snap one quick pic last night just to prove the point.

Just for Steffen, I've decided to go for the scheme he said he liked when I reviewed the kit - the Slovak machine used in the Invasion of Poland.

I've taken my life in my hands and tried a new paint (to me) on the topsides - Revell's Aqua Color. Despite my initial resevations, it's airbrushed surprisingly well - it's pretty thick in the pot, but thins nicely with Vallejo airbrush thinners. Following an online description of Slovak colours, I've used "Nato Olive" as the basic topsides colour. When the Slovaks inherited the aircraft, they overpainted the original squadron insignia. I'm presuming they held stocks of the original paints, so I cut a Frisket mask and mixed a little green with the paint to give a slightly "fresher" colour - almost, but not quite, the same as the original camouflage.

I need to check my refs tonight, but the overpainting might have been done in two stages, with the chevron overpainted in a darker green (possible an RLM paint). Hopefully, more tonight when I get the airbrush out.

All the best

Nice progress, Rowan!

Honestly, with your furious start I thought you were finishing it before I would have done my Focke Wulf 190 F-1 ... glad you did not, so I do not seem to be that slow

TAKE PIX!

best wishes

Hi Rowan

Good to see that you can stand the pressure and are making progress on this one

It would be very interesting with other versions of this one in the future. As you pointed out there are some interesting colour schemes for this aircraft.

Hi again

After a shocking delay, I actually got back underway on Sunday, starting to apply a few decals... and then, lo and behold! an imposter arrived on the scene!

Eduard have very kindly sent us their new Series IV version.

As you'd expect, the kit shares most of the same parts - but it proves me completely wrong in my assumption over the hows & whys of the break-down of the fuselage parts:

The new kit avoids the long joint for the top decking and so should prove a simpler build. Watch out for the full Review to follow but, basically, the new kit looks a stunner - all the detail fof the original... plus, of course, it's the definitive Avia B.534 version in many people's eyes.

At the risk of delaying my Series III, it's hard to resist starting the Series IV to go with it!

All the best

Really cool Rowan. I have not yet had the privilege of seeing one of these beauts up close and personal, but they look to have the same subtle panel lines of the Fw 190 kit. Eduard has definately raised the bar as far as engraved panel lines as of late.

Looking great!

Eduard just makes nice kits. Even I can make their kits come out pretty nice. I got two of their FWs. Third on the way. I think I am going to sit back and wait until my skills improve also. Anyway, I still have about six Fokker D.VIIs that I'm trying to figure out. To many options...to little time.

Yeah, Ive seen it, and came real close to increasing my stash of D.VIIs. I still might. Maybe we can do a campaign to reduce the D.VII load one day. I got some neat decals. My next D.VII build will be the "Seven Swabians" They sure are good kits.
