Hi,
I am about to begin to build a Nakajima Ki-84 Frank Prototype. But the colors suggested in the instructions are different that the IJN or IJA usually used, and without brand reference. What colors are these?
-Cockpit color Nakajima
-Cockpit color Mitsubishi
-cowling color
-Dark green Nakajima
-Light green
Please, could anybody help me with them?

G'day,

Depending on the manufacturer of the Ki 84 kit, depends on the model paint manufacturer, Hasegawa kits call for Mr Color paint numbers.

IJAAF paints in the following brands:

Gunze
Mr Color
Xtra Color
Testors Model Master
Tamiya
[#'s 13 and 14 are the IJA Green and IJA Grey and 71 is a cockpit Green].
OOP AeroMaster 'Warbirds' paint was the only brand that produced the Blue/Black cowling colour

Also try this site for a reference of the Ki 84
http://www.ijaafphotos.com

Hope this helps

Hi Guacho,

I built my Hayate using references from the wealth of info available from J-aircraft, under Aircraft Interiors:

Nakajima Interior Color Mix

J-Aircraft's Color Research - Modelers Perspective

J-Aircraft's Camouflage and Colors and Paint

An archaic but useful reference: Japanese Paint

Japanese Aircraft Interior Colors

Rod's Warbirds, the URL posted by Rob above, is a "first stop" for many of my projects. For those who think Imperial Japanese planes can be too overweathered, i.e., paint chipping/peeling, one needs only visit that site. The 2nd & 3rd Frank pages have some good shots of operational Hayates with large areas stripped bare.

Tamiya makes a color, “Cockpit Green, XF-71”. It is a light, almost minty green.

Cowling color--a blue-black.

Dark green Nakajima--very close to U.S. OD.

Light green--on the underside and/or fabric? A light gray-green, "Pistachio", similar to RAF Sky, and the controversial RLM 84.

Great!
I found an article on the first issue of MAI, exactly about that Frank, plus your tips, so, now I have enough information to paint my bird.
Thank you guys,
Ramao
