Sometimes:

when there is really a visible difference with the quality of the parts in the kit

when I am sure that the changes will be clearly visible once that the kit is finished

In general: I tend to buy the best model available of any type of plane that interests me, this largely reduces the need for aftermarket.

I do love the current trend of "re-engineering" an old kit, adding all kinds of PE and resin detailing to an older kit

I like to use aftermarket sets if its going to make things look more realistic, it can make a big improvement sometimes and the amount of aftermarket partes out there is huge.
