Anigrand has announced a fascinating two part release of Japanese WWII experimental aircraft in 1/144 scale. One set is for experimental aircraft for the Imperial Japanese navy and the other is for the imperial Japanese Army.

1/144 scale Experimental defensive airplanes special set vol.1 - Imperial Japan Navy
Four types are included: the Mitsubishi Q2M1 Taiyo, the Aichi S1A1 Denko, the Nakajima J5N1 Tenrai and the Kawanishi J6K1 Jinpu.

Aichi S1A-1 Denko - A night-fighter was requested by Navy to replace the Nakajima J1N Gekko. It’s role would be for a radar-equipped airplane to combat the American B-29 raids. Two prototypes were constructed in 1945, but were destroyed during Allies bomb attacks.
Nakajima J5N-1 Tenrai - An interceptor capable of reaching a top speed of 666 km/h.Designed to combat the heavily armed US fighters. The aircraft never achieved its design speed. Six prototypes were built.
Kawanishi J6K-1 Jinpu - Designed to meet IJN requirement for a land based interceptor and was based on J3K1 with a new engine. Project was cancelled and Kawanishi proceeded with N1K2 instead.
Mitsubishi Q2M-1 Taiyo - Anti-Submarine airplane was ordered for design and construction in the last stages of war. Development did not advance from the mock up stage.

Four types are included: Mitsubishi Ki-109 / Rikugun Ki-93 / Kawasaki Ki-103B Randy / Mitsubishi Ki-167

Mitsubishi Ki-109 - A heavy fighter that was to be used against the American B-29s at high altitude, but the Allied began making night raids at low altitude. The Ki-109 was no longer needed.
Kawasaki Ki-102b – Designed as a ground-attack fighter. It was kept in reserve to protect Japan, carrying the Igo-1-B air-to-ground guided missile for the Allied invasion of Japan.
Rikugun Ki-93 - A heavy fighter armed with large calibre cannon to serve in the anti-shipping or bomber-destroyer roles. Only one example of the Ki-93 was completed, and it was destroyed by American bombing.
Mitsubishi Ki-167 - Special attack plane specifically adapted to accommodate the so-called Sakuradan thermite bomb. It is recorded that a unit equipped with Ki-167s was formed in June 1945, and was scheduled to leave Japan for an attack on Saipan on August.
