Anigrand Craftsworks are to release this month a 1/72nd Sikorsky S-42, a luxury flying boat used by Pan Am.
Aircraft History
In 1931, Igor Sikorsky laid out plans for a new, larger flying boat based on the earlier Sikorsky S-40. At the time Pan Am requested for a flying boat with which to span the Pacific Ocean and open up routes to the Far East. Both the Glenn Martin Company and Sikorsky responsed, the latter's design being the S-42. For the first time the airline's publicists could rightfully declare these machines as luxury airliners. A total of ten S-42s were ordered. Manufactured by the Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft in Connecticut. The prototype first flew on March 1934, and the aircraft quickly demonstrated its impressive abilities. This aircraft broke all existing world records for load, speed, range and altitude. Pan Am used S-42 on Latin America routes, then on Transpacific & Transatlantic routes.
