History

The CF-100 was Canada's first indigenously designed jet fighter. It formed the backbone of NORAD's air defences in Canada throughout the 1950s, and later on provided excellent electronic warfare training, keeping its successors frustrated during exercises. First flown in 1950, it was finally retired in 1981.

First Impressions

The CF-100 has been fairly well provided for by decal manufacturers, which is a blessing given the generally horrible Hobbycraft decals and the complete lack in the Astra vac kit. Both of these sheets provide sufficient national markings and stencils to do one aircraft.

The printing is very sharp and the carrier film is as limited as possible, most often not extending past the printed outline of the marking. The decals look very thin. These are traditional silk-screen printing, not ALPS nor laser printed.

Each package contains one decal sheet.

Set 023-72 offers four options:

• 1: CF-100 Mk 4A 18245 of 425 Allouette Squadron;
  
• 2: CF-100 Mk 4B 18335 of 445 Wolverine Squadron;
  
• 3: CF-100 Mk 4B 18383 of 440 Bat Squadron;
  
• 4: CF-100 Mk 4B 18378 of 419 Moose Squadron.
  

Options 1 and 2 are overall natural metal with black details while 3 and 4 are European based in dark green/dark grey disruptive camouflage over light grey undersides. The 440 and 445 aircraft wear colourful rudder markings.

Set 024-72 offers three options:

• 1: CF-100 Mk 4B 18450 of 409 Nighthawk Squadron;
  
• 2: CF-100 Mk 5 18524 of 428 Ghost Squadron;
  
• 3: CF-100 Mk 4B 18345 of no 3 AW(F) OTU's “Bald Eagles” display team
  

The side profile for 524 incorrectly shows it as a Mk 4. A complete listing of all CF-100s produced may be found on the Avroland website.

instruction sheets

The instructions come on 8 1/2 X 11 sheets printed in full colour. The first sheet offers full left side profiles while the second shows 4-view drawings detailing the placement of the stencils and national markings.

The instruction sheet mentions that the decals may be harmed by strong setting solutions. I did a test using portions of a Voodoo's fuselage flash and my poor old knocked-about Revell 1/72 Voodoo.

The results show that used carefully, Solvaset did not damage this decal, and that used without any setting solution at all, the decal still conforms to the moulded detail.
