Introduction

It was roughly 18 years ago that I first heard that this manuscript was being prepared. Knowing the research process like I do it is not surprising that it took this long. The author is Mr. Colin A. Owers. His high caliber research on the subject of early aviation subjects is known world wide to anyone who is a devotee of the genre. He has written multiple manuscripts that have been published in Aeronaut, the old Flying Machines Press and Windsock publications. He has contributed regularly to other authors works over the years and has earned a position of trust and the mantle of a reliable historian. Along with the artistic contributions of Messers Jim Miller and Bob Pearson I find this a quality item for anyone’s library.

The Contents

This is the first of two volumes that describe and illustrate the development of the America and Felixstowe flying boats of WWI with text and aircraft production and technical specifications. An overview of their operational use is included. These volumes will be of high interest to aviation historians, enthusiasts, and modelers alike. Volume 1 has 332 photos, 27 color profiles, a color cutaway drawing of the H-16, and 34 each scale drawings of the F.1 and F.3 airframes. The book has 272 pages.

Conclusion

The various Flying boats discussed and their histories are covered thoroughly. It even gets down to the men behind the designs and as with the military contracts and a bit of the dark side of a scandal that developed because of the cooperation between the American and British companies involved.
