With Luftwaffe subjects being so popular - and unfortunately, the quality of many kit decals being so variable - it's always sensible to a stock of reliable aftermarket insignia ready to use.
Eduard have now produced two sets of national insignia for the Bf 109G. They are designed for Eduard's own Gustav kits - but, of course (unless you buy over-sprues) they already comes with excellent decals, so the real value for me in these decals is to replace inferior sets in other manufacturers' kits.
The two sets available are:
D48027 - Bf 109G-6 Balkenkreuze This sheet provides sufficient decals for two models, with over-wing crosses and two styles each of fuselage and underside crosses.
D48028 - Bf 109G Swastikas. The small sheet has enough items for six models, with swastikas in two sizes.
Simple instructions show the placement of the items on well drawn generic side and plan views, but you'll obviously need to refer to further references to decide which style is appropriate for any specific airframe.
I've been very impressed by Eduard's own-produced decals of late, and I consider them some of the best quality currently available. The printing is pin-sharp and excess carrier film is minimal - and the most important thing is that they snuggle down without any fuss over a gloss surface to produce a "painted on" look that allows fine detail to show. Based on that experience, I'd recommend Eduard's decals and would use them without hesitation.
Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AEROSCALE.
SUMMARY
Highs: High quality decals with precise registration and minimal excess carrier film.Lows: None that I've noted.Verdict: Eduard's aftermarket insignia will be useful for anyone building a 1:48 mid- to late-war Bf 109.
