by: Darren Baker [ CMOT ]

Introduction

Master tend to release large batches of updates rather than many items over the course of a year, one of the items in the last major update came in four scales and covers the Apache Attack Helicopter. These four items provide the chain gun and pitot in 1/72nd, 1/48th, 1/35th and 1/32nd scales.

Contents

These offerings are supplied inside Ziploc plastic bags attached to a card hanger. Inside of the Ziploc bag is another bag that is segmented and contains the parts offered, there is also a foam protector with a pre-shaped sleeve and muzzle. The four scales covered by these Master offerings are below along with the number of kits listed as available in those scales.
1/72nd scale = 71 kits ID AM-72-109
1/48th scale = 50 kits ID AM-48-125
1/35th scale = 9 kits ID AM-35-002
1/32nd scale = 4 kits ID AM-32-092

Review

Master is possibly one of the finessed manufacturers at there today when it comes to turned metal parts in both brass and aluminium. The vented collar for the barrel appears to be a single piece of brass that has been drilled through and is hollow in 1/32nd scale, but inspection shows that this is the case for all of the offerings here including 1/72nd scale. Inspection of this part leaves me with no other comment than WOW.

The muzzles of all four offerings is provided as a plastic or resin part, I am going for a resin piece due to the level of detail present. It is worth mentioning that Master has provided two muzzles in the 1/72nd scale set, I cannot see any difference in the two offerings and I wonder if it’s a case of one for me and the other for the carpet monster.

If you look at the instruction sheets you will see that parts for each of the sets are fundamentally the same parts, all be it smaller and smaller in size. The pitot’s provided covers the tail and the two stubby wings; great care will need to be taken with these parts in all scales and in the case of the 1/72nd scale tail pitot it could very easily stab you. So be warned that while these sets are designed to uplift your model they do require some skill and a gentle touch to get the most from them

The photo etched parts are of course very small and will again require a good eye and a steady hand. The size is not so small that it is impossible to do, but when it comes to 1/72nd scale kits it will require I higher skill level than I consider myself to have. With that said these sets will all lift the look of a model providing you have the skill level to get the most from them.

The images for this review are from Master as the detail us better than I could achieve.

Conclusion

A few years ago someone said to me “that it does not matter how much money you throw at a model in terms of after-market items, it is the skill level you have to make the most of those items”, well these four sets from Master are a very good case of that statement. I would be happy to tackle these sets as regards the three larger scales, but the 1/72nd scale offering would I feel be beyond my ability. So these sets are really nice additions to the Master range, but they do require some skills to get the most from them.
SUMMARY
Highs: The incredible level of detail and finesse really makes these offerings something special in my book.
Lows: Not really a weakness of the product, but make sure you are up to using them.
Verdict: A set that will make a nicer improvement to the business end of the Apache. I also feel that the pitot’s provided will make a surprising level of improvement
