Spirit of St. Louis

by: Dave O'Meara [ GRUMPYOLDMAN ]

At a mere $12.98US, you get a pretty decent kit. Certainly light years ahead of the previous offerings.

Packed in a top opening box, with a nice box-top painting of the Spirit of St Louis flying over the "City of Lights" or as I remember Paris, the "city of outrageous good looking women!"

Packed inside, you will find the wings in a separate bag, struts, etc. in a separate bag, the smaller detail parts in a separate bag, and the clear parts in a separate bag.

The decal sheet is loose, but has a protective wax paper covering, between the pages of the instruction booklet.

Assembly is covered in the usual picture drawings, and parts are actually called out by name, number, and paint color as you go along. The colors are simply named, not numbered to any manufacturer's paint line. But I really do not think any one with even the basic skills will have a problem figuring out: Silver-Aluminum-Light Blue-Tan-Brown-Flat Black-Flat White-or Flesh.

The fuselage has the stringers etc. molded to the side walls, and a complete cockpit is included, with a decal for the instrument panel. Two figures are included, one a seated "Lucky Lindy", or if you prefer, to have him standing outside, there's a standing "Lucky Lindy". A quick once over of the parts when snapping the photos, showed no flash, although a few ejection pin marks will need careful filling and sanding in a few places. I didn't notice any sink marks on the outside surfaces.

The decals are well printed, although they do look a little thick. I'm not sure how effective it will be, but the burnished metal effect for the cowling are printed on the decal sheet, with a separate Spirit of St Louis printed on clear film, for those more advanced or adventuresome among us.

Conclusion
All in all, a decent looking kit of the Spirit of St. Louis, and the added cockpit details, and figures make it close to perfect for those who like this type of aircraft.
SUMMARY
The long awaited 1/48 scale Spirit of St Louis has finally landed at a hobby shop near you. Was it worth the wait? Well, it is certainly light years ahead of previous offering, so feel free to toss out those old Glencoe kits.

I'm rewriting this in a much more humoristic way, to help over inflate my ego, and place my self on a pedestal, because I don't have a life, and plastic models are the only thing I live for. I plead guilty as charged to excessive babble, light hearted humor, and continued encouragement to youngsters...
