As I found when I built Eduard’s
new-tool Fw 190A, it really goes together like a dream. Eduard have taken on board all the criticism levelled at their earlier kit and redesigned everything to produce one of the most straightforward kits I’ve been lucky enough to build for Aeroscale.
Of course, any kit involves some compromises and, while the exhausts are actually slightly hollowed-out, the effect is limited and really more of raised lip at the end of each pipe. Don’t take that as a criticism - the exhausts are a heck of a lot better than in most styrene kits. But, if you want deeper openings, you’ll either have to do a lot of fiddly work (and remember - these pipes aren’t circular in cross section), or get an upgrade set. Which is where Roy Sutherland has come to the rescue with a double-pack of beautifully hollowed-out resin exhausts.
As usual with Barracuda sets, the casting is essentially perfect. Each exhaust pipe has quite a deep opening and, importantly, wafer-thin walls. The finished effect should be excellent and as true to scale as it's possible to cast.
The parts are designed as drop-in replacements for the kit exhausts, so no surgery is required to install them. This makes the upgrade ideal for anyone new to using resin parts - simply cut each group of exhausts off the casting plinth (and you don't even have to be ultra-accurate in doing that) and you're ready to go.
The sample set didn't come with any instructions, but that's no problem with such a straightforward upgrade.
Conclusion
This is another beautifully produced upgrade from Roy. It's a major improvement over the kit exhausts and at $7.95 for two sets, I think it's very good value for money. Recommended.
