Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 Decals

Eagle Editions have released two new sets of decals with markings for an interesting selection of Bf 109G-6s. The subjects are based on photos drawn from noted Luftwaffe historian Jerry Crandall's extensive private reference collection. All the featured aircraft are fitted with the original style of canopy except one. Three of the machines are armed with underwing cannon (and provisionally a fourth), while another carries 21cm rockets.

Each sheet contains one full set of national markings and comprehensive servicing stencils as an alternative to the kit-supplied decals (plus an extra pair of swastikas), with individual markings for four subject aircraft as follows:

EC #171
1: "Yellow 6" of 12./JG 51, Eastern Front, 1944 in temporary winter camouflage
2: "Red (or Black) 11" of 2./JG 302, Jüterbog, February 1944
3: "Blue 14" of 12./JG 2 Beaumont le Roger, France, 1943
4: "Black 1" of 8./JG 54, Lüneburg, Germany, Spring 1944

EC#172
1: "Red (or Black) 7" of 2./JG 302, flown by Xaver Neumeier, Jüterbog, February 1944
2: "Blue 17" of 12./JG 2, Beaumont le Roger, France, 1943
3: "White 3" of 1./JG 300 Wildesau, Bonn-Hagelar, Spring 1944 in nightfighter camouflage
4: "White 11" of 7./JG 54, Spring 1944

According to the instructions, red is the most likely colour for the numbers on the pair of 2/JG 302 machines, but a nice touch is the inclusion of alternative black numerals too.

The printing is superb, with thin and glossy items produced in pin-sharp register and minimal excess carrier film in most cases. To cater for markets where the Nazi swastika is banned, they are printed "split-style" with a centre inlay to apply.

As usual with Eagle Editions, the decals are backed up with excellent instructions which include detailed notes on each aircraft and a full page stencil placement guide. Each colour scheme is illustrated with a high quality colour profile by James Bentley, plus smaller top and bottom views.

EC #171 and EC #172 are available now in 1:32, 1:48 and 1:72 priced as follows:
1:32 - $24.50
1:48 - $18.50
1:72 - $13.50

Conclusion
These are two more excellent additions to Eagle Editions' range of decals. The subjects chosen are all attractive and include a couple of interesting challenges in the winter and nightfighter schemes for anyone looking for an alternative to the standard camouflage.

SUMMARY
Highs: Superbly printed decals backed up with detailed instructions.
Lows: It would be nice to have four full sets of national markings and stencils to save relying on often inferior kit decals, but that would inevitably raise the price considerably. (Note: this is based on the 1:48 review sample.)
Verdict: This is another fine pair of releases from Eagle Editions to cater for Gustavs in three popular modelling scales.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
