To be honest, I wasn’t entirely convinced the exhausts on
Eduard’s fantastic new-tool 1:48 P-51D really needed upgrading. After all, they’re already slightly hollowed out (See Andy Brasier’s excellent pre-release build of the kit
HERE), but comparing the new Brassin upgrades with the kit parts has left me in no doubt which I prefer.
The resin parts are not only simpler to install (being single castings instead of made up of two pieces each side), but the hollowed out exhausts are deeper and the pipes themselves better defined, with delicate weld seams.
Importantly, they also appear to protrude through the fairings like the full-sized exhausts do, rather than simply sitting in slots the way the kit versions do without some very fiddly filling. It’s a subtle difference, but a real improvement and a definite time-saver.
There’s a neatly illustrated set of instructions, but they’re hardly needed because the new parts are simple drop-in replacements.
Conclusion
Better detailed and easier to install -
Eduard’s Brassin shrouded exhausts are a very worthwhile addition to their new-tool Mustang if they’re appropriate to the version you’re building.
