P-51D Wheels - Various Tread-Styles

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

Eduard have followed up their initial release of Brassin wheels for the P-51D Mustang with no less than four new sets - each offering a different style of tyre-tread.

The new selection is as follows:

648503 - P-51D Wheels - Oval Treads
648512 - P-51D Wheels - Rhomboid Treads
648513 - P-51D Wheels - Pointed Cross Treads
648514 - P-51D Wheels - Grooved Treads

The sets arrive in resealable bags with a card backing and a small set of instructions. As with the Diamond-Tread wheels reviewed HERE, each set contains 5 x resin parts, plus a sheet of washi tape painting masks.

The casting is basically perfect in the sample items, with some superb detail that is in a different league to anything you're likely to find moulded in styrene - with the added bonus that there aren't any mould-lines or seams to worry about. The tyres feature petite makers' logos and data on the sidewalls, crisply defined treads, and are moulded slightly "weighted", with the flat spot where the parts sit on their casting plinths.

The sets are designed as upgrades for Eduard's own 1:48 P-51D, but could obviously be used to enhance any Mustang kit in this scale with a little coaxing where necessary. For Eduard's kit, no surgery is required - the new wheels are direct replacements for the plastic parts.

Once again there's a neat little set of instructions provided, although modellers used to working with resin will probably hardly need them. The inclusion of washi tape painting masks is great, because this material is ideally flexible for following contoured surfaces.

Conclusion
Apart from the fact that these wheels are not only better detailed and simpler to use than the diamond-tread style included in Eduard's Mustang, the Brassin range now offers pretty much every type of wheel you're likely to find fitted during the iconic fighter's long career.

Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AEROSCALE.
SUMMARY
Highs: Simple to install, with superb detail. Washi tape masks included.
Lows: None noted.
Verdict: Eduard's Brassin wheels offer an instant and dramatic improvement over their P-51D's styrene wheels, and the range covers tyre-treads far beyond what's offered in the kit.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
