Among the latest releases from Barracuda Studios are two alternative sets of 1:48 resin wheels for Fw 190 models. The first set offers ribbed tyres, while the second has plain tyres. To be honest, though, "plain" is rather a misnomer, because the tyres feature beautifully fine raised beading. Both sets sport the maker's "Continental" logo and data text.

The sets arrive in a simple zip-lock bag on a car backing and, as you'd expect with BarracudaCast parts, the quality is superb (Gunnar Jansson is the pattern maker in this instance) and the castings are flawless. Aside from the tyre detail outlined above, the definition on the hubs is exquisite, far better than is practical on kits' injection moulded wheels, with tiny pins in the centre of each hub, and even recessed inflation nozzles.

Whether you're seeking better detailed wheels than the styrene originals, or want to replace the inaccurate parts in many older kits, the sets are suitable for any of the commonly available 1:48 kits of the Fw 190A-6 through 'A-9, 'F, 'G and 'D.

There aren't any instructions included, but they'd be largely superfluous because the sets are so straightforward. Removing the parts from their casting blocks will be basically self-explanatory, so even newcomers to working with resin should have no problems using and fitting the wheels. Deciding which set to go for would really be beyond the scope of an instruction sheet, and is down to consulting references for the individual airframe you're modelling.

Boths sets are available now from Barracuda Studios:
BR48422 Fw 190A-6 through A-9, F, D Mainwheels w Ribbed Tire
BR48423 Fw 190A-6 through A-9, F, D Mainwheels w Smooth Tire

Conclusion
These sets will instantly enhance any 1:48 kit of the Fw 190 from the 'A-6 onward. The price is very reasonable for the level of detail offered and they will be quick and simple to install. Highly recommended.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
